Yaki Yaki @ The Campus, Ampang: A Fiery New Izakaya That Sizzles With Flavour & Fun

July 23, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

The Japanese dining scene in Ampang just got a fiery upgrade. Enter Yaki Yaki Izakaya, the newest hotspot located at The Campus Ampang, serving sizzling izakaya bites, creative maki rolls, bold flavours, and an atmosphere made for lingering long past dinner.

Designed with warm wood interiors and Tokyo-style vibes, this izakaya channels the laid-back energy of Japanese gastropubs — where grilled skewers, great drinks, and shared plates are a way of life.

🍶 Start With Sips & Surprises

The drink menu is where the fun begins. Try their smooth House Sake at just RM22 — crisp, refreshing, and perfect for winding down.

For something indulgent and unique, the Matcha Strawberry (RM24) blends Japanese green tea with sweet berry flavours in a creamy, dreamy cup.

Yaki Soba

Yaki Yaki’s rendition of Yaki Soba goes beyond your typical stir-fried noodles. This generous plate comes loaded with silky Japanese noodles tossed with crunchy vegetables, earthy shimeji mushrooms, and perfectly cooked seafood like plump prawns, tender squid, slices of salmon, and saba (mackerel) that brings a savoury depth. Finished with fluffy egg ribbons and house seasoning, every bite delivers umami, heat, and that satisfying wok hei aroma that hits all the right notes.

Yaki Tsukune

No izakaya is complete without grilled skewers, and Yaki Yaki delivers with a focused yakitori menu that’s small but impactful. The Yaki Tsukune brings you with the  juicy chicken meatballs that are grilled over charcoal, glazed in a sweet-salty tare sauce, and lightly charred to perfection

You’ll also want the Tiger Prawn Ninniku, which features fresh tiger prawns kissed with garlic butter and grilled to smoky, briny bliss.

Yaki Yaki also brings flair to the sushi game. The Champion Sashimi Roll is a head-turner: packed with salmon, tuna, white fish, avocado, cucumber, mayonnaise, spicy powder, and crunchy tempura bits. It’s rich, layered, and made to impress.

The California Roll gets a premium makeover with giant crab meat, creamy avocado, and a fiery spicy tomato mayo that keeps each bite exciting.

Meanwhile, the Hamachi with Truffle Oil Pickle elevates things further where combining delicate yellowtail sashimi with ponzu, pickled greens, chilli, and aromatic truffle oil for a gourmet, melt-in-your-mouth moment.

The standout fusion creation on the menu is the Yaki Cheong Fun; a reimagined sushi roll wrapped in delicate rice noodle sheets instead of seaweed. Inside: crispy soft shell crab, chunks of salmon, diced mango, cucumber, and ikura (salmon roe). It’s topped with fried shallots and a spicy goma sauce that ties it all together with creamy nuttiness and a hint of heat. A bite of this is a little sweet, a little spicy, a little crunchy and totally addictive.

Not to be outdone, the small plates bring boldness in bite-sized form. From the addictive Grilled Edamame tossed in mala sauce (not your average soy bean snack!) to the Salmon Truffle Tataki, Saba Sauce, Salmon Potato Salad, Garlic Mayo Lotus Roots, and more where every dish is thoughtfully crafted and bursting with contrast and creativity.

Don’t leave without dessert. Their Signature Crepe offers the perfect finish where it brings you with the  light, luscious, and elegantly indulgent, especially after a savoury, sake-kissed meal.

Whether you’re planning a weekday chill-out session, a date night, or a group hangout with friends, Yaki Yaki brings the kind of food and energy that turns a casual meal into a full-blown experience. With its exciting fusion of izakaya favourites, signature maki rolls, creative small bites, and Japanese-inspired cocktails, this is one campus joint you’ll keep coming back to.
