A Symphony of Sweetness: Monsieur Darren’s High Tea Experience

May 20, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

In the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s bustling culinary scene, a new haven for pastry aficionados has emerged. Nestled within the elegant confines of M Resort & Hotel, Monsieur Darren offers an afternoon tea experience that transcends the ordinary, blending French patisserie artistry with Malaysian sensibilities.

Chef Darren Chin, a luminary in Malaysia’s fine dining landscape, is the mastermind behind Monsieur Darren. Renowned for his Michelin-starred establishment, DC Restaurant, Chin’s culinary journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation. His latest venture, Monsieur Darren, is a testament to his passion for pastry and his desire to bring a slice of Paris to Kuala Lumpur.

Monsieur Darren is more than just a patisserie; it’s the culmination of Chin’s lifelong dream to create a space dedicated to the art of pastry. Drawing inspiration from his formative years in Paris and his mentors at Le Cordon Bleu, Chin envisioned a place where classic French desserts could be reimagined with a modern twist. This vision came to life during the COVID-19 pandemic when he began offering cakes online, eventually leading to the establishment of a brick-and-mortar location.

The Ambience

Stepping into Monsieur Darren is akin to entering a Parisian patisserie. The interior exudes elegance, with desserts displayed under glass domes, reminiscent of precious jewels. The moss-covered display adds a touch of whimsy, creating an enchanting atmosphere that invites guests to indulge their senses.

Available daily from 3 PM to 6 PM, Monsieur Darren’s High Tea is a meticulously curated affair. Priced at RM168 for two, the set includes an array of sweet and savory delights, accompanied by two selections of premium teas or coffees.

Sweets to Savor

The sweet offerings are a testament to the patisserie’s commitment to quality and creativity:

  • Raspberry Guava Choc Bonbon: A harmonious blend of tart raspberry and tropical guava, encased in rich chocolate.
  • MD Almond Rocher: A delightful crunch of almonds enveloped in smooth chocolate, offering a textural contrast that’s both satisfying and indulgent.
  • Yuzu Jasmine Macaron: A delicate balance of citrusy yuzu and fragrant jasmine, this macaron is a nod to the patisserie’s fusion of Eastern and Western flavors.
  • Vanilla Choux Roll: Light and airy, this choux pastry is filled with a luscious vanilla cream, showcasing the patisserie’s mastery of classic techniques.

Scones and Tea Cakes

No high tea is complete without scones, and Monsieur Darren delivers:

  • Cranberry Parmesan Scone: A savory twist on the traditional scone, the sharpness of parmesan complements the tartness of cranberries, creating a unique flavor profile.
  • Pistachio Raspberry Financier: This moist almond cake is elevated with the addition of pistachios and raspberries, offering a nutty and fruity delight.

Savory Selections

The savory items are equally impressive, showcasing a range of flavors and textures:

  • Focaccia Maitake Chicken Salami Sandwich: A hearty sandwich featuring earthy maitake mushrooms and flavorful chicken salami, nestled between slices of freshly baked focaccia.
  • Roasted Pumpkin Corn Pita: Sweet roasted pumpkin and corn are paired with a soft pita, creating a comforting and satisfying bite.
  • Cream Cheese and Smoked Onion Gougères: These airy cheese puffs are infused with the smoky sweetness of onions, offering a savory treat that’s hard to resist.
  • Pico de Gallo Tartlet: A zesty and refreshing tartlet filled with a vibrant pico de gallo, adding a burst of freshness to the assortment.

Monsieur Darren’s High Tea is more than just an afternoon indulgence; it’s an experience that celebrates the art of pastry, the joy of flavors, and the warmth of hospitality. Whether you’re a connoisseur of fine desserts or simply seeking a delightful escape from the everyday, this patisserie offers a taste of Parisian elegance in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
