Fiery Flavours and Tangy Temptations: Fish With You Heats Up Kepong

June 12, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

If you’re someone who believes that spice is life, and a tangy broth is a remedy for the soul, then Fish With You might just be your next culinary obsession. Hailing from China with more than 2,500 outlets worldwide, this fast-casual giant has now landed its second Malaysian location—this time in the ever-buzzing neighbourhood of Kepong, following the successful debut at Starling Mall.

Touted as the world’s largest Chinese Sauerkraut Fish chain, Fish With You has built a global fanbase around one iconic dish: Suan Cai Yu (酸菜鱼), or Chinese sauerkraut fish.

We visited their newly opened Kepong outlet recently—and left with tingling lips, satisfied appetites, and a newfound respect for the delicate balance of sour, spicy, and savoury.

Signature Hot-Oil Suancai Fish

Signature Hot-Oil Suancai Fish is the indisputable headliner here. Served bubbling in a deep metal pot, this dish features silky slices of fish steeped in a golden, spicy-sour broth. The star ingredient—suancai, or pickled mustard greens—adds tang and depth, while a tableside pour of sizzling hot oil perfumes the broth and awakens the senses. The fish itself was impressively tender, absorbing every nuance of the complex soup.

With unlimited helpings of white and black rice, the heat becomes more than manageable—it becomes addictive.

Pork Sliced Simmered in Classic Aromatic Spicy Soup

While the fish dish is the main attraction, the supporting cast holds its own. The Pork Sliced Simmered in Classic Aromatic Spicy Soup is a perfect comfort dish for spice lovers. The thin pork slices were delicately poached, swimming in a deeply flavoured Sichuan-style mala broth. It’s not a brute-force kind of spice—it builds slowly, leaving a warm trail and a lingering urge for “just one more bite.”

Claypot Grilled Brinjal

Vegetarians and veggie lovers, take note: the Claypot Grilled Brinjal is an absolute standout. The eggplant, velvety and charred, was soaked in a soy-based sauce that leaned savoury-sweet, with aromatic garlic and a touch of minced meat. Served sizzling hot, it’s the kind of dish that’s both rustic and refined.

Claypot Stir Fry Chilli Pork

Then there’s the Claypot Stir Fry Chilli Pork—an explosion of wok hei, garlic, green and red chillies, and perfectly seared pork slices. The dry-style stir-fry boasted that elusive smoky aroma only high-heat cooking can deliver. For lovers of intense, punchy flavours, this one delivers in spades.

Pork Skewers

The Pork Skewers are simple yet satisfying. Lightly charred and generously dusted with cumin and chilli powder, they evoked memories of Beijing street-side grills—each bite juicy and smoky, with a satisfying chew.

At Fish With You, the experience is more than just about food—it’s about heat, depth, and discovery. It’s a masterclass in balancing bold spice with soulful broths, and it captures the essence of Chinese home-style comfort with a modern fast-casual twist.

Whether you’re a seasoned suan cai yu enthusiast or a curious newcomer to Chinese spicy cuisine, Fish With You in Kepong deserves a spot on your must-try list. But be warned: one visit may not be enough.
