LaGula by The Hungry Tapir: Redefining Vegan Dining in the Heart of Kuala Lumpur

May 30, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

Nestled amid the bustling streets, lantern-lit alleys, and vibrant energy of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, LaGula by The Hungry Tapir is not just another trendy eatery — it’s a statement. As the only vegan and vegetarian restaurant in KL with a fully serviced bar, LaGula confidently shatters every tired stereotype about plant-based dining.

From the moment you step inside, you know you’re somewhere special. The space is chic yet laid-back, with tropical accents, lush greenery, neon signs, and a touch of rebellious flair. There’s a palpable energy, a sense of community, and an unmistakable joy in celebrating plant-based living without compromise. LaGula’s menu is a fusion dream — blending East and West, comfort food and local staples, breakfast favourites and modern reimaginings — all 100% plant-based.

Tortilla Party

A colourful and fun starter that sets the mood right. Crispy tortilla chips came with two types of vegan ceviche: a refreshing hedgehog mushroom & mango mix, and a punchy konjac “see-food” ceviche topped with creamy sriracha mayo. Bright, tangy, and full of textures, this dish had us scraping every last bit off the plate.

 “Steak” Me Out Tonight

The star of the show. Using Green Rebel plant-based steak, this dish nailed the meaty texture and umami richness we didn’t think possible without beef. It came with silky truffle mashed potatoes, peppery brown gravy, and crisp asparagus — a hearty, comforting plate that impressed even our meat-loving friend.

Smashed Double BBQ Cheese Burger

A tower of indulgence. Double homemade seitan patties stacked with vegan cheddar, mozzarella, carrot bacon, jalapeños, and gherkins, all drenched in smoky BBQ sauce. Juicy, messy, and totally satisfying — exactly what you want from a burger, minus the guilt.

 Burnin’ Pan Mee

A fiery spin on a beloved Malaysian noodle dish. The handmade noodles were perfectly chewy, topped with fragrant homemade chilli, earthy mushrooms, and fresh baby spinach. Spicy enough to make you break a sweat, but so addictive you just keep going.

 Dark Chocolate Cake

Rich, dense, and deeply chocolatey — this was the kind of dessert you dream about long after the last bite.

Tiramisu

Light, creamy, and beautifully balanced, this alcohol-free tiramisu delivered all the coffee-soaked indulgence you want, without feeling heavy.

With a full bar on-site, LaGula’s drink menu is just as impressive as its food. Whether you’re here for brunch mocktails or late-night cocktails, there’s something for every mood.

 In The Tropics

A tropical burst of orange, strawberry, lemon, peach, and passionfruit, with a ginger zing.

 Choc on Choc

Imagine a chocolate-banana smoothie meets espresso, with oat milk, cinnamon, and crunchy cacao nibs.

The Cranberries

A tart, fizzy blend of cranberry, passionfruit, ginger ale, and basil. Refreshing, with just enough herbal complexity to keep things interesting.

 The Green Elixir

A green juice that’s both healthy and delicious. Cucumber, kale, green apple, lemon, and ginger — it tastes like a detox but feels like a treat. Tiramisu (alcohol-free)

Dining at LaGula isn’t just about eating vegan — it’s about experiencing what plant-based cuisine can truly be. It’s fun, it’s exciting, and it proves that vegan food is not a compromise, but a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and flavour.
