February 10, 2015 by StrawberrY Gal

It’s a big bowl of prosperity in the Poon Choi at which is now being served at Shang Palace, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur for the Chinese New Year celebration.

Known as Braised Premium Assorted Hot Dish in Claypot on the Chinese New Year menu, it’s an assembly of the most auspicious ingredients in a big claypot.

Also known as the Big Bowl Feast, Poon Choi is so meaningful for the family reunion lunch or dinner during this festive period. It’s also suitable for Chinese New Year feasting with friends, both personal and corporate.

There are three layers of ingredients in Poon Choi, comprising seafood, meat and vegetables, braised in a supreme sauce. They include abalones, sea cucumber, dried scallops, fish maw, tiger prawns, black mushrooms, roast duck, steamed chicken, dried oysters, black moss, fatt choy balls, gluten, broccoli and Chinese cabbage.

It’s a scrumptious and attractive dish that draws everyone to dig in, unveiling the treasures beneath. All the natural essence and sweetness of the top ingredients also trickle down, flavouring the other two layers.

Partaking of this Poon Choi brings prosperity, wealth, happiness and abundance for everyone. For instance, abalone brings guaranteed abundance of wealth, sea cucumber and dried oysters stand for happiness, black moss or fatt choy means rousing prosperity, and prawns generate laughter and joy.

Braised Premium Assorted Hot Dish in Claypot is being served at Shang palace from now till 5 March, at RM199++ per person (minimum 4 persons).

Poon Choi has its origins in the Walled Village or Wai Chuen in the New Territories in Hong Kong. It is meant for communal feasting during festivals, rituals, weddings, ancestral worship and local village events.

It is usually about fresh ingredients found in the village, and is supposed to be dry ingredients, usually seafood on top. All the ingredients are drenched with a flavourful sauce that reaches the bottom.
