Breakfast & Thieves: Where Global Brunch Meets Local Soul in Bangsar

June 28, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

Tucked into the leafy edges of Bangsar’s Jalan Riong, Breakfast & Thieves is more than just a café — it’s a quiet force in the Kuala Lumpur brunch scene. From its name to its menu, everything here hints at playful rebellion and thoughtful storytelling. Born in Melbourne and raised in KL, the café carries a laid-back urban charm with deep culinary intent — where comfort food meets cross-cultural identity.

Step inside and you’re greeted by a space that’s effortlessly warm. Industrial beams, large glass windows, rustic wood textures, and potted greens create a setting that’s both relaxed and refined — the kind of place where brunch becomes more than just a meal. It’s the meeting point of conversations, coffee rituals, and imaginative plates that honour both technique and heritage.

Admiral Cheng Ho

Named after the famed Chinese admiral who sailed across Southeast Asia in the 15th century, this signature pasta dish is a tribute to fearless flavour. Here, the familiar structure of aglio-olio spaghetti is reinvented with a bold, Malaysian twist. At its base: a house-made kam heong chili lemongrass paste, rich with garlic, dried shrimp, curry leaves, and just the right amount of heat. This aromatic medley clings to strands of al dente spaghetti, forming a bed for fresh clams, succulent tiger prawns, and the delicate crunch of crispy Sakura ebi.

Adding depth and regional character are okra slices, curled curry leaves, and a generous flourish of bonito flakes that curl with the heat, imparting smokiness and umami. Fresh coriander cuts through with its brightness, balancing the richness of the sauce.

With its sunlit interiors, quiet hum of conversation, and food that’s as expressive as it is satisfying, Breakfast & Thieves isn’t just another trendy brunch spot. It’s a reminder that brunch can be bold.
