Celebrating Silence in Bali

February 16, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

While many New Year’s festivities go off with a bang, the first day of the year by the Balinese calendar calls for a much different approach – silence. Nyepi, also referred to as Bali’s Day of Silence is when the island comes to a standstill. Even the airport closes for 24 hours. This year the holiday falls on March 11th and to mark the day Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana, is offering guests ‘The Art of Serenity.’

The Art of Serenity gives travelers access to a two-night silent escape from March 10 – 12th in the lush grounds of Tanah Gajah. The package consists of a three-course lunch and dinner at the Tempayan, a parade excursion on the eve of Nyepi, and several complimentary activities within the resort grounds to help guests slow down as the rest of the island does too. These include rice paddy trekking (on March 10th or 12th), fishing, stargazing, drawing games, and swan feeding. Daily breakfast and afternoon tea is also included as well as a photo session with a digital photo included, and a one-way airport transfer.

On March 10th, when Bali gets loud before it gets quiet, guests have the option of watching an Ogoh – Ogoh parade in a neighboring village. These towering bamboo and paper mache statues depict mythological creatures. The parade finishes with the effigies being burnt, symbolizing the release of all things negative.

“In today’s fast-paced world a day of quiet and rest is a true gift,” said Deasy Swandarini, general manager of Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana. “There is a Rumi quote: ‘The quieter you become the more you are able to hear.’ We hope our guests can experience that during Nyepi at our resort.”

Tanah Gajah was once the holiday home for legendary Indonesian architect and designer, Hendra Hadiprana, and his family. The five-hectare property features twenty art-filled Balinese-style accommodation options, ranging from one bedroom suites with open-air bathrooms and lotus pond views, to a one-of-a-kind two bedroom estate with a private pool. Dining options include the Tempayan restaurant, serving authentic Balinese cuisine and western classics, and Panen Padi open exclusively for afternoon tea for in-house guests. The spa features two spa suites overlooking the countryside and the resort has two expansive swimming pools in addition to villas with plunge pools.
