A Bold Thai Feast at Taan Thai, Sunway Velocity

June 24, 2026 by StrawberrY Gal

If your palate is yearning for a culinary jolt—a symphony of spicy, sour, sweet, and smoky—look no further than Taan Thai at Sunway Velocity. Tucked into the mall’s lively dining strip, this vibrant eatery delivers an unapologetically bold journey through Thailand’s most cherished flavours, balancing time-honoured recipes with a touch of modern indulgence.

Every great Thai meal begins with a spark, and the Spicy Tomyam Soup here is nothing short of electrifying. The broth arrives scarlet and steaming, striking that elusive balance of searing heat, tangy lime, and fragrant lemongrass. It is, quite simply, a classic done right—sharp, warming, and deeply satisfying from the very first spoonful.
For a more playful opener, the Thai Betel Leaf Wrap (Miang Kham) invites diners to get hands-on. Wrapping wild pepper leaves around roasted coconut, lime, ginger, shallots, and peanuts creates an edible mosaic of textures and flavours—sweet, nutty, piquant, and aromatic all at once. It’s a dish that captures the communal, interactive spirit of Thai dining.
The standout among the starters, however, is the Isan Salad with Grilled Pork Neck. A specialty of northeastern Thailand, it comes with beautifully charred, smoky pork neck. Each forkful is a study in contrast—bright acidity meeting rich, savoury depth—showcasing the bold character of Isan cuisine.
Taan Thai’s signature creations take centre stage with confidence. The Golden Crispy Prawn Donut is every bit the crowd-pleaser it promises to be: a golden, craggy exterior giving way to a juicy, springy prawn filling. It’s a satisfying interplay of crunch and succulence.
For comfort with a kick, the Signature Green Curry Chicken arrives velvety and fragrant. Rich with coconut cream and gently lifted by green chilli heat, it delivers warmth without overwhelming the palate. Paired with jasmine rice, it’s easy to see why this dish remains a timeless favourite.
Perhaps the most dramatic offering is the Deep Fried Seabass in Spicy Sour Curry. A whole seabass, fried to a delicate crisp, rests in a vibrant pool of tangy curry sauce. The contrast between brittle, golden skin and the bold, punchy gravy creates a dish that is as texturally exciting as it is flavourful.

A cool conclusion

After such a spice-forward feast, a cooling dessert feels less like an option and more like a necessity. The Red Ruby Bingsu offers a delightful twist on a Thai classic—finely shaved ice topped with jewel-like water chestnut “rubies” and a gentle sweetness that soothes the palate. Light, refreshing, and subtly indulgent, it provides the perfect finale.

Verdict

Taan Thai at Sunway Velocity captures the essence of Thai cuisine—vibrant, authentic, and deeply satisfying. Whether you come for the nostalgic punch of a well-executed tomyam or the irresistible crunch of a crispy prawn donut, one thing is certain: you’ll leave already planning your next visit.
