Subway Malaysia Reaches 400-Restaurant Milestone with First MRT Station Outlet

October 17, 2026 by StrawberrY Gal

Subway Malaysia today marked a major milestone with the opening of Restaurant #400 at MRT Bukit Bintang, its first restaurant located within an MRT station. Fittingly, Restaurant #400 brings a Subway to a subway, placing freshly made-to-order food at the heart of one of Kuala Lumpur’s busiest transport hubs and making it easier for commuters and city-goers to enjoy their favourite subs on the move.

Underlining its ambition to ensure “Freshness can reach more Malaysians,” the new outlet reflects Subway Malaysia’s continued effort to make fresh and customisable food more accessible. From traditional restaurants and kiosks to drive-thrus and now an MRT station, the brand continues to adapt its presence around the way Malaysians move and eat.

“Reaching 400 restaurants is a milestone we’re proud of and it shows how far Subway Malaysia has come since Subway’s first restaurant debut at Ampang Point in 1999. Today, we are present in every state and 108 cities across Malaysia. Since Pegacorn took over as Master Franchisee in 2020, we have significantly accelerated our expansion, building 189 restaurants between 2021 and 2026, amounting to almost half of our current 400-restaurant network. We remain committed to opening at least 50 new restaurants every year so more Malaysians can enjoy fresh, made-to-order food close to where they live, work and travel. Our master franchise model enables us to grow faster while staying relevant to the local market, while Subway’s strong operating system allows us to operate across different locations, formats and sizes. Restaurant #400 at MRT Bukit Bintang is a great example of how we can bring Subway closer to where Malaysians are,” said Kon Kin Siong, Chief Executive Officer of Pegacorn, Master Franchisee of Subway Malaysia.

Subway Malaysia wanted Restaurant #400 to be a milestone Malaysians could be part of, rather than simply hear about. Bringing the idea of “400 Restaurants. Built Together.” to life, commuters at MRT Bukit Bintang were invited from 4 to 7 October to help complete a large-scale 400-piece jigsaw installation, designed in the shape of a Subway sandwich. Each day, a limited number of pieces were released, with participants answering a simple question centred on Subway, Malaysia or both to unlock a numbered piece and add it to the installation. With every piece added, the giant sandwich came closer to completion and served as a visual representation of how Subway Malaysia’s journey to 400 restaurants has been built together with Malaysians over the years.

The jigsaw installation, positioned right in front of the Subway MRT Bukit Bintang restaurant saw a total of 400 Malaysians take part, from morning commuters and first-time Subway customers to long-time regulars. Each received a numbered invitation to return on opening day and celebrate the milestone they helped bring to life.

The installation remained intentionally incomplete until today, when four Subway leaders placed the final four pieces to complete the picture and officially open Restaurant #400 in front of the participants who had helped build it. The final pieces were placed by Kon Kin Siong, Chief Executive Officer; Sng Lee Ping, Chief Operating Officer; George Ang, Director; and Justin Morley, Area General Manager, Master Franchise, Subway APAC.

“Restaurant #400 isn’t a number Subway reached on its own. Malaysians helped us get here, by making us part of their everyday lives, one sub at a time. So instead of simply opening the doors, we wanted to invite them to help complete the story. Every numbered piece at MRT Bukit Bintang represents someone who chose to be part of this milestone, and today we get to celebrate it with them,” said Evelyn Lee, Marketing Director of Subway Malaysia.

As a thank-you, returning participants also received a limited-edition Subway #400 Celebration Pack, including the Restaurant #400 Collector Tote and a commemorative numbered tag matching their piece. When brought together, the 400 Collector Totes form a giant jigsaw image of Subway’s Italian B.M.T.® sandwich, adding another layer to the “400 Restaurants. Built Together.” story. The tote and its collectable patches mark the start of a wider Subway collectables journey, with more to come.

Adding a little more sweetness to the milestone, Danial Zikri, 24, an Asset Management Executive from Bukit Bintang, was among the Malaysians who took part in the Restaurant #400 activation and became the one lucky winner of the Subway 400 Sweet Surprise, receiving a special reward of 400 Subway cookies to enjoy throughout 2027. Danial was the recipient of the Subway #400 Collector Tote with the numbered piece 325.

The surprise was revealed through a special commemorative card, with the 400-cookie reward issued via MYSubway as vouchers redeemable from 1 January to 31 December 2027. From placing a piece in the Restaurant #400 installation to receiving 400 cookies, Danial’s story adds a personal touch to a milestone built together with Malaysians and makes 2027 a little sweeter.

Since opening its first restaurant at Ampang Point in 1999, Subway Malaysia has grown to 400 restaurants across all states and 108 cities in Malaysia. Its network is supported by 85 primary franchisees and more than 2,400 team members nationwide, including across East Malaysia, with around 73% of ingredients sourced locally.

The network spans a range of locations and formats, from kiosks and traditional restaurants to drive-thrus and now, for the first time, an MRT station. This includes Subway Alam Damai, the largest Subway restaurant by size in Asia Pacific, while Restaurant #400 brings the brand into one of Kuala Lumpur’s busiest transport hubs.

Beyond where it opens, Subway Malaysia is also looking at how to make the overall Subway experience faster, simpler and more convenient. The brand has introduced self-ordering kiosks (SOK) across selected restaurants, giving customers another way to order, particularly when they are commuting or have limited time. Through SOK, customers can also choose from recommended fixed-build Subway recipes for a simpler ordering experience alongside the customisation Subway is known for. As part of this continued accessibility journey, Subway Malaysia will also be introducing a loyalty programme in the near future.

Subway #400 is now open at MRT Bukit Bintang, serving Subway’s full menu of freshly made-to-order, customisable favourites.
