MOONCAKE PROMOTION AT SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, KUALA LUMPUR

September 12, 2013 by StrawberrY Gal

The moon is at its roundest on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, and the event is celebrated as the Mooncake or Mid Autumn Festival. That’s because the festival is always in the middle of autumn, and it falls on September 19 this year.

Traditionally family members would gather together during the festival to celebrate and eat mooncakes at night. Children would light their colourful lanterns and join in the fun of the celebration. The Mooncake Festival is also associated with a few legends, the most famous of which is about the role the mooncakes played in the overthrow of the Mongols by the Chinese in 1368AD. A message to rise up against the oppressors was hidden in the mooncakes and passed along, resulting in a successful rebellion.

Mooncakes are certainly about unity among family, and strengthening ties with friends, both personal and corporate. They make meaningful gifts. At the Shang Palace, the classic varieties of mooncakes are handmade to a traditional recipe by Chinese Executive Chef Tan Kim Weng. These include the Lotus Seed Paste, White Lotus Seed Paste, Red Bean Paste and Black Sesame Paste Mooncakes, with or without egg yolks and the Assorted Nuts and Sun-dried Fruits.
