Xiang Xiang at Sunway Carnival Mall – A Refined Taste of Hunan Excellence

September 2, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

Returning to Penang always feels like coming home, and for me, no homecoming is complete without a visit to Xiang Xiang at Sunway Carnival Mall. This restaurant has long been one of my cherished favourites, serving up dishes that embody the fiery spirit of Hunan cuisine while embracing a finesse that elevates every meal into something memorable.

The experience begins with the Steamed Egg with Shrimp, a dish so delicately crafted it borders on art. Velvety smooth and silken on the palate, it is elevated by the natural sweetness of fresh shrimp — simple, refined, and utterly satisfying.

The highlight for me is the Golden Broth Sour and Spicy Fish. Bold yet balanced, this dish is an orchestration of tang and heat, with tender fish slices soaking up a broth that is at once addictive and comforting. It is a masterclass in how spice can be both fiery and nuanced.

For those who appreciate the warmth of comfort food, the Claypot Tofu Stew is deeply rewarding. Served piping hot, it combines the richness of tofu with a savoury broth that lingers long after the last spoonful, offering both heart and substance.

Completing the experience, the Stir-Fried Spicy Squid Tentacles add a lively burst of flavour — chewy, perfectly seasoned, and kissed with just the right level of heat. It is a dish that excites as much as it satisfies.

At Xiang Xiang, every plate feels thoughtfully executed, every flavour finely balanced. More than just a casual eatery, it is a destination for those who seek authentic Hunan cuisine presented with polish and passion. For me, it is a must-visit whenever I return to Penang : a place where flavour, craft, and comfort come together seamlessly.
