Ipoh’s Gem: A Delightful Yong Tau Fu Experience at Choong Kee Pokok Besar

July 24, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

During a recent trip to Ipoh, the hunt for the best yong tau fu led me to Choong Kee Pokok Besar, a local favorite highly recommended by my Ipoh friends. The sight of a queue snaking in front of Choong Kee’s stall was a clear sign of their popularity, but it moved fairly quickly.

The highlight of Choong Kee, of course, is their yong tau fu. The sheer variety was overwhelming in the best way possible. Baskets overflowed with an enticing selection: crispy fried tofu puffs in an array of shapes, plump and juicy fish balls, colorful chilies tempting us with their fiery promise, and classic favorites like fried eggplant and bitter gourd. Each piece was beautifully  crafted and bursting with potential flavor.

After receiving a basket, we embarked on a delightful selection mission, carefully choosing our favorites from the spread. We couldn’t resist the crispy appeal of the fried tofu puffs, the promise of savory goodness in the fish balls, and the vibrant colors of the chilies.  The wait for our meal was filled with anticipation, and the first bite of the yong tau fu did not disappoint. The delicate tofu skins gave way to light and fluffy fillings, each bursting with flavor.

A must to try is also their famous asam laksa. We couldn’t resist adding a bowl to our order, and it proved to be an excellent decision. The tangy and aromatic broth was a delightful dance on the taste buds, perfectly balanced by the sweetness and creaminess of the coconut milk. The springy noodles were cooked to al dente perfection, providing a satisfying chew in every bite. The thick broth clung to the noodles, ensuring each mouthful was packed with flavor.

So, time to visit this famous Choong Kee Pokok Besar for their yong tau fu
