When it comes to taking food pictures, there are so many tips to try! Let’s start with a Japanese restaurant, there will be many delicious dishes with colourful definition to cover for sure. Since there are many kinds of tips take food pictures, here are 3 of my most-important tips.

I went to Umai-Ya which is one of the more popular Japanese restaurants in town, they have a wide choice of delights that will definitely tempt you to the fullest. With lots of choices of intricate dishes and fresh items, there will definitely be tons of photography opportunities to be taken there.
1) Group Shots

At times; putting a few food together to capture them can give you a nice composition of the food and what the varieties have to offer. It is one of the things that you might consider when taking photos of food where you can organize a few of the dishes accordingly and take a group shot of it. And for me, I love arranging my food by the corner of a table to take the group shot.
2) Choose spots with Good Lighting

Natural light is always the best when taking shots of food. And usually, we love dining in the afternoon so that we can take the best shots of everything. This is where you do not need any artificial lighting at all such as flash. So, with nice lighting you can have your pictures taken beautifully and easily. Like here, you can see this Chawanmushi under beautiful natural light, you really don’t need much editing. The Mini Shanshoku Chawan Mushi comes with 3 types of small steamed egg custard (Roasted Eel, Ikur, Foie Gras) in Egg Shell. I absolutely love with the Roasted Eel as the egg is simply silky and smooth, while the Eel just melts in your mouth.
3) Close Up & Focusing

Taking shots of fresh sashimi is interesting, because there are many colours, shapes & textures of fresh items available. To show how fresh or huge some of the seafood are, I always focus on certain ones that are beautiful and will be able to let the readers see the freshness of the foods. For example, the Sashimi Moriawase (Seasonal Price). It comes complete with all the delightful cuts of sashimi types which includes Toro, Botan-ebi, Oysters, Salmon , Kampachi and Shiromaguro. These fish are fresh served on top of an ice bed to keep it cool & refreshing, I’d say the highlights are definitely the pulpy oysters.

Another Instagram friendly meal would definitely be the the Kamo Meshi (RM 34.90) rice bowl. The Claypot Rice is topped with Smoked Duck, Seabass and an oozy half-cooked Egg on top. I will definitely come back for more!

We also tried their Gyu Niku Erengi Butter Yaki (4 pcs) (RM 25.90). To enjoy this Slice Beef Wrapped King Oyster Mushroom with Garlic Mayo Sauce, you have to eat it in one go to experience the flavourful blend. The King Oyster Mushroom is simply well paired and complete the juiciness!

Avocado Maki (RM 15.90) is another must try here as well. The beautifully wrapped maki with the healthy avocado comes with crispy fried Prawns and Salmon in the middle. It is incredibly good with a crunchy and light combination.

Itokezuri Age Tofu (3 pcs) (RM 17.90)
This is one of the dishes that’s unexpectedly really delicious. The smooth and silky tofu combined with their special sauce made the dish extremely flavourful. The overall taste is brought out with the added bonito flake.
