Where Time Stands Still — Irama Dining Brings Malaysian Elegance to Old Malaya

October 9, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

Perched at the foothills of Bukit Nanas and framed by the glittering Kuala Lumpur Tower, Irama Dining Kuala Lumpur stands as a tribute to Malaysia’s timeless charm — where heritage, architecture, and cuisine harmoniously intertwine.

Located within Old Malaya, a colonial-era structure built in 1919, this elegant restaurant occupies one of the city’s most storied buildings. Once home to British military officers during the colonial days, the structure later became a lively Eurasian neighborhood fondly dubbed the “Old European Settlement.”

Following decades of neglect post-independence, Old Malaya was rescued from demolition by a group of passionate conservationists who painstakingly restored it to its former glory. Today, the landmark embodies both nostalgia and renewal — a bridge between Kuala Lumpur’s historic soul and its cosmopolitan heartbeat.

An Atmosphere Steeped in Heritage

Stepping into Irama Dining Kuala Lumpur feels like crossing time itself.

The space blends old-world elegance with understated luxury — arched wooden doors, mosaic floor tiles, and vintage-style chandeliers lend a warm, golden glow to the dining hall.

A narrow stairway leads guests to the upper floor, where the restaurant reveals its true character — intimate, airy, and bathed in natural light. As soothing melodies fill the space, the ambiance becomes one of calm sophistication, ideal for meaningful conversations or quiet reflection over a good meal.

Just as in its sister outlet in Penang, Irama Dining Kuala Lumpur is graced by a mural of Bella — the restaurant’s poetic muse — a graceful lady said to represent the spirit of timeless Malaysian hospitality.

Dining with a View — KL’s Most Romantic Table

The restaurant’s glass-ceiling private dining room is a masterpiece on its own. As the sun sets, the Kuala Lumpur Tower is perfectly framed against the skyline — its golden glow casting reflections on the glass panels and polished tableware.

It’s no surprise that this elegant corner has become a favourite spot for romantic dinners and proposals — a space where stories unfold and memories are etched against the backdrop of Malaysia’s most iconic landmark.

Those seeking an unforgettable evening are advised to reserve a table upstairs, where the warm radiance of KL Tower envelops each dish in a magical light.

The Set Hidang is a beautiful expression of this heritage — a curated feast that celebrates tradition, community, and the enduring comfort of shared meals.

Golden Beginnings: Familiar Flavours, Perfectly Executed

The dining experience begins with the humble yet irresistible Cucur Jagung — golden corn fritters crisped to perfection. Made with corn, dried shrimp, bean sprouts, and chives, these fritters deliver layers of texture and flavour in every bite, perfectly complemented by the house-made dipping sauce that adds a tangy, mildly spicy kick.

Seafood enthusiasts will also appreciate the Sambak Tumis Soting , a fiery yet balanced classic featuring fresh squid simmered in sambal. The dish captures the bold spirit of Malay cooking — rich, aromatic, and deeply satisfying.

The Set Hidang: A Celebration of Heritage and Heart

Priced at RM75 per pax, the Set Hidang is a culinary journey that brings together a thoughtfully curated selection of Malay favourites — the kind of meal that invites diners to slow down, savour, and connect over shared plates.

The feast begins with Ayam Pandan, tender marinated chicken infused with local herbs and spices, wrapped in pandan leaves, and fried to golden perfection. The pandan imparts a delicate fragrance that enhances the juiciness of the meat, creating a comforting and aromatic start.

Served alongside Nasi Beringin and Nasi Bunga Telang, both rice varieties carry subtle floral notes and natural colour, setting the stage for the vibrant dishes to come.

Among them, the Pais Barramundi is a highlight — barramundi marinated with turmeric, shredded coconut, and chili padi, then wrapped in banana leaves and grilled till smoky and tender. The result is a harmony of spice, sweetness, and smokiness that lingers delightfully.

Another star of the set is the Ayam Kerutup, a richly spiced chicken dish slow-cooked in coconut milk and layered with kerisik and local herbs. Each spoonful is a comforting blend of creaminess and spice — unmistakably Malay, and wonderfully soulful.

Balancing the flavours is the Masak Lemak Sotong, where tender squid meets a creamy, spicy coconut gravy, offering a luxurious contrast to the fiery sambals that accompany the meal.

Speaking of sambals, the Sambal Platter — featuring Sambal Belacan and Sambal Tempoyak — adds bursts of heat and depth to every dish.

To freshen the palate, the Set Hidang includes two refreshing Kerabu — each with its own personality.

The Kerabu Mangga Ikan Bilis combines sweet-and-sour mango with bunga kantan and crispy anchovies, tossed in a citrusy, tangy dressing with a touch of lime. Meanwhile, the Kerabu Pucuk Paku Kerang blends tender fern shoots, bunga kantan, and cockles, coated in a zesty sauce that’s both aromatic and appetising. Together, these salads bring brightness and texture to the spread, balancing the richness of the mains.

The meal closes on a note of sweetness — and nostalgia. The Bubur Sumsum, with its smooth rice flour pudding drizzled in rich gula Melaka syrup, is the very definition of comfort.

A Sweet Ending Worth Remembering

For something more indulgent, the Banana Roll Caramel — deep-fried caramelised banana served with vanilla ice cream and mixed berries — delivers a delightful crunch with creamy, fruity freshness.

A Celebration of Togetherness and Taste

At its heart, the Set Hidang (RM75 per pax) is more than just a meal — it’s an experience that captures the warmth of Malay hospitality and the artistry of traditional cooking. Each dish complements the next, creating a balanced and heartfelt dining experience that honours both heritage and modern presentation.

Perfect for family gatherings, friendly get-togethers, or anyone looking to rediscover the joy of classic flavours done right, the Set Hidang is a feast that reminds us why Malaysian cuisine continues to inspire pride and passion — one delicious bite at a time.
