 Hidden behind the quiet façade of Atria Shopping Gallery in Damansara Jaya is a dining sanctuary that evokes the spirit of Tokyo’s back-alley izakayas — intimate, understated, and rich with quiet charm. This unassuming address offers something far more profound than just Japanese food. It offers an experience steeped in seasonality, subtlety, and soulful storytelling.

Inside, the world slows. Shoji-style cubicles bathe in the gentle glow of lanterns. Dishes appear through a humble wooden window, reminiscent of traditional Japanese ryokans. Jazz hums softly in the background, and for a brief moment, you are no longer in Petaling Jaya, but in a tucked-away street of Kyoto or Meguro.

A Kaiseki Journey Rooted in Nabe

While sushi and teppanyaki dominate the Japanese dining landscape in Malaysia, this hidden gem sets itself apart with a refined Kaiseki menu built around the heartwarming Nabe — the traditional Japanese hotpot known for its communal spirit and nourishing essence.

Offered in curated sets of four, six, or seven courses, the Chanko Nabe Kaiseki is the star of the show — a multi-course symphony where each dish is timed and plated with reverence. The 7-course set opens with a quartet of appetisers that are deceptively simple yet thoughtfully executed:

A cloud-like potato salad that balances richness and tang,

Tororo (grated yam) topped with luminous fish roe,

Sliced fish in zesty ponzu, and

These are followed by pristine sashimi — glistening, expertly sliced, and served at just the right chill to preserve its ocean purity. The texture, temperature, and taste align in quiet perfection.

The Himonoyaki (grilled fish) arrives next — a thick cut of seasonal catch, delicately charred and bursting with natural flavour. Crisp-edged veggie tempura and golden karaage follow, light and masterfully fried, each bite a study in contrast and technique.

The Soul-Warming Chanko Nabe

When the Nabe arrives, steaming and simmering before you, it is a vision of warmth and generosity. Traditionally consumed by sumo wrestlers for sustenance and strength, this version is elevated with refinement and finesse.

The pot brims with treasures: sweet prawns, tender oysters, plump clams, and silky salmon nestled beside fresh chicken, duck slices, tofu, and mushrooms. Each ingredient imparts its essence to the clear broth, resulting in a flavour that is gentle yet deep, clean yet comforting. You taste the purity — no MSG, no shortcuts — just umami born of time, care, and quality ingredients.

And then, the finale: a Donabe rice dish layered with flounder slices and fresh oysters. Cooked in a traditional claypot, the rice takes on an earthy aroma and develops okoge — the coveted golden crust that adds a smoky crunch to every bite. Flavoured with light soy and accented by the umami-rich seafood, it is a dish of quiet complexity and rustic joy.

More Than Nabe — A Celebration of Fish

To complement the set, we ventured into the a la carte fish dishes — both of which stole the show.

Kombu Age Red Mullet Shioyaki: The red mullet is lightly cured with kombu (kelp), then grilled to perfection. Each bite releases an oceanic sweetness, intensified by the umami kiss of seaweed and open flame. The charred skin crackles, while the flesh remains moist and tender.

 

Hirame Himono Teriyaki: A dried flounder, sun-kissed and gently lacquered with house-made teriyaki glaze. It’s a study in contrasts — the chew of the preserved fish meets the sticky-sweet gloss of sauce, creating a harmony of umami, sweetness, and smoke.

A Quiet Masterpiece

In an age where dining is often hurried, this izakaya reminds us to slow down, savour, and reconnect with food as a form of presence. Each dish here is more than nourishment — it is an embodiment of shun (seasonality), wa (harmony), and omotenashi (hospitality).

This is not a restaurant for trend-chasers. It is a place for those who find joy in details — in the golden crust of Donabe rice, the breath of smoke on grilled fish, the quiet warmth of broth shared over laughter and tea.

Whether you’re a connoisseur of Japanese cuisine or simply someone in search of soulful comfort, this izakaya is a hidden gem that deserves your attention.
