Matthew Ng, Head of Mobile eXperience, Samsung Malaysia Electronics Byline: From Hardware to Human Experience

September 11, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

The release of the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 marks yet another milestone for Samsung – demonstrating its relentless pursuit of refining AI experiences not just for bar-type smartphones, but reimagining them for the foldable form factor in ways that are both novel and deeply meaningful.

To shed light on Samsung’s vision for intuitive, seamless, and human-centered AI, Matthew Ng, Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Malaysia Electronics, shares the thinking that shaped the quintessential Galaxy AI experience.

1. What separates the Galaxy AI experience from others in the market?

Galaxy AI is not just a set of features – it’s a philosophy. We believe AI is the new UI. It should be ambient, discreet, and essential – working in the background so that our users can focus on what matters most. Our approach is to continually evolve, identifying which services and experiences can be amplified by AI and integrating them directly into the device experience.

Our vision extends far beyond smartphones – AI is becoming a core part of the Galaxy ecosystem, enabling effortless, boundaryless interactions across devices.

Our long-standing partnership with Google takes this even further. With Gemini deeply integrated at the hardware level – via intuitive tools like Circle to Search or side-button activation – we make AI instantly accessible and context-aware. It’s not an isolated app; it’s embedded in the way you capture, create, and communicate – on any form factor, anywhere in the Galaxy universe.

2. What is at the core of the Galaxy AI experience?

At its heart, Galaxy AI is about elevating human creativity and productivity. We are excited by Malaysia’s positive reception of Galaxy AI features like Photo Assist, Transcript Assist and Writing Assist, which are available on the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 that bring what once required advanced desktop software into the palm of your hands – empowering anyone to shape their ideal content instantly.

On the productivity front, Gemini Live is also a popular feature in Malaysia, connecting local users’ actions across apps: scheduling meetings, syncing calendars, and delivering key updates to the right people – seamlessly, intelligently, and without friction.

On the Galaxy Z Flip7, convenience is the core experience with its new FlexWindow, as the ability to engage with Gemini Live fully is a determining factor for many Malaysians who are constantly on the go.

With One UI 8 on Android 16, multimodal AI is woven into every layer of the experience. Our mission is to make every action more convenient, more personal, and more connected – whether you’re on a Galaxy phone, tablet, or foldable. We aren’t just delivering technology; we’re crafting experiences that adapt to your lifestyle and scale with your ambitions.

3. Is the foldable form factor truly the way forward for Samsung?

For us, foldables aren’t just a technological statement – they’re a design canvas for personalised experiences. The shared foundation of advanced hardware, software, and AI powers both the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Fold7 – but each is optimised for a different user journey.

Malaysia is a reflection of users discovering their personal journeys with our devices. Galaxy Z Series users are actively taking advantage of Galaxy AI features 74% of the time. This is a significant indicator that form factor is a conduit that enables possibilities where AI features can be adapted to different lifestyles.

For example, the Galaxy Z Flip7 delivers a compact, expressive experience built for spontaneity and one-handed use. Its expanded FlexWindow brings Now Bar and Now Brief to life, letting you preview your day or capture the perfect shot – without unfolding the device.

The Galaxy Z Fold7, on the other hand, is an immersive productivity powerhouse. With its expansive display, you can dive into deep research in Split View, reference multiple sources without breaking your workflow, and enhance it all with tools like Gemini and Circle to Search. It’s about staying in the flow – gathering, analysing, and creating – without interruption.

4. How does Galaxy AI embody the role of a true AI companion?

A true AI companion should feel intuitive, ever-present, yet never intrusive. On the Z Flip7, Galaxy AI transforms the cover screen into an intelligent dashboard – delivering bite-sized, relevant updates without demanding your full attention.

On the Z Fold7, unfolding the screen also unfolds the full breadth of Galaxy AI: Writing Assist, Drawing Assist, Split Screen workflows, and Gemini Live – all presented where and when you need them. This adaptability is what makes Galaxy AI a companion rather than a tool – it anticipates, assists, and adapts to the way you naturally work and create.

5. Is this Samsung’s complete vision for Galaxy AI across form factors?

Our vision is never static. While Galaxy AI today is powerful, refined, and ready for users, it is only the beginning. We will continue to innovate, evolve, and redefine what mobile AI can be – shaping new possibilities as technology and user needs grow.

To ensure our users are always future-ready, we provide seven years of software upgrades – continuously enhancing One UI 8 and Galaxy AI with subtle yet meaningful improvements.

We know the future will bring new habits, tools, and expectations. And Samsung is not just prepared for that future – we are building it, exploring new frontiers in mobile innovation and AI with the same boldness that made foldables possible in the first place.
