NYONYA ROOTS, 3K SPORTS COMPLEX

May 1, 2013 by StrawberrY Gal

It is hard to find Nyonya dishes in Klang Valley and where I always go to for Nyonya Dishes will be Melaka Street which is located at 1 Utama. We had spotted a small restaurant which is located at the 3K Sports Complex and Inn for some nyonya dishes. Nyonya Roots had nothing much to shout about on its decoration as there is no fancy theme as well as classy décor.

– The Inside View-

The restaurant is simply plain and according to the owner, Sue Cheah who is from Penang says that she had learn the cooking from his mum and most of the cooking styles are also back from there as well. Sue had also opened her own restaurant called Restoran Ma Ma’s in Damansara Jaya which was opened 13 years ago. Despite of moving over to Subang Jaya here, she still have her customer base who is from PJ who come over for meals during weekends as well.

-Pai Tee-

-Pai Tee-

We started with some appetizers which is the pai tee. The crisp pastry cups filled with stir-fried vegetables like mengkuang as well as carrots together. Crispy cup and juicy shredded vegetables never faild to impress me too and it is like feeling at my own hometown to dine.
Price: RM 9.90 – medium / RM 14.90 – large

Kerabu is another item which is not to be missed in Nyonya Cuisine. In Nyonya Roots, we are served with the 4 Angle Bean Kerabu which is quite special compared to those I usually have will be the Mango Kerabu. The soury delight with the twist of cripiness is just good too.
Price: RM 14.90

As we know, one of the famous Nyonya cuisines includes the otak otak. We are being served with the fish otak otak where you can find strips of fishes in the middle and it is truly alike what I have in Penang.
Price: RM 4.90

– Gulai Tumis Fish-

– Gulai Tumis Fish-

Gulai Tumis Fish is the next we had. Soury taste of the ala- Penang style had impressed me a lot. With the soury based fish head which is well mix with the bunga kantan is simply lovely and impressively delicious. The savory delights are simply lovely and it is really good when we had it together with rice.
Price: RM 26.90 – medium / RM 34.90 – large

– The Curry Fish Head-

– The Curry Fish Head-

Using the Grouper fish head, the curry fish is one of my favorites. The thick brooth with the generous amount of fish is being served to our table. By using grouper fish, the chef had also added lady fingers and taufu bok inside it as well. The gravy is really good but I found it not too spicy and the owner had toned down slightly to cater to the tastebuds of the locals. The grouper fish is simply lovely and I love the gravy so much where it’s taste good when it mixed with rice.
Price: RM 30.90– medium / RM 44.90 – large

– The Sambal Prawns with Petai-

– The Sambal Prawns with Petai-

More Penang Nyonya dishes is coming! The Sambal Prawns with Petai which is just fabulous. The sambal petai is simply well served with the pinch of petail taste together with the juicy fresh prawn s with it.
Price;RM 26.90 – medium / RM 34.90 – large)

The Chicken Kapitan is good as well. Well served with dry curry paste, the chicken is just good and tender. It is well covered with all the thick and rich gravy which enhanced the overall taste.
Price: RM 12.90 – small / RM 20.90 – medium / RM 26.90 – large)

Jeu Hoo Char is some of the popular dishes among the Nyonya Food. Thinly shreeded turnip and it is then stir fried with carrot and mushroom. The Jeu Hoo Char is well stir fried and serves together with the sambal together with it. Usually, the spoonful of the Jeu Hoo Char and sambal is being put on the fresh lettuce leaf and wrapped it together before putting inside the mouth.
Price: RM 12.90 – medium / RM 18.90 – large

Perut Ikan, a traditional nyonya dishes which is where they prepared the dish by using the fish stomach. The dish brings a sligh light soury taste where the herbs added to it.
Price: RM 13.90 – medium / RM 21.90 – large

– Inchi Kabin-

– Inchi Kabin-

Inchi Kabin is a Nyonya-style fried chicken which is well marinated with the spices. The chicken is giving a crispy texture and the meat inside is also juicy. It is usually served together with the Lee & Parrin Sauce which is one of the most famous one when we had Inchi Kabin.
Price: RM 12.90 – small / RM 20.90 – medium, RM 26.90 – large
