Nong & Jimmy: A Culinary Legacy of Southern Thai BBQ in Kuala Lumpur

October 16, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

For nearly three decades, Nong & Jimmy Thai BBQ Seafood has been a staple in Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant dining scene, serving up authentic southern Thai flavors that have captured the hearts and palates of locals and visitors alike. Founded in 1994, the restaurant’s journey began in Ampang, where Uncle Jimmy, with a deep passion for the rich culinary traditions of southern Thailand, set out to introduce a unique dining experience centered around Thai BBQ seafood. Today, Nong & Jimmy is recognized as the first-ever Thai BBQ seafood restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, a pioneer in bringing the smoky, grilled delights of Thai cuisine to Malaysia.
Uncle Jimmy’s bold venture was rooted in a simple but powerful mission: to offer Malaysians an authentic taste of Thailand, particularly the rich and diverse flavors of its southern region. With a focus on fresh, high-quality seafood and a careful blend of Thai spices and herbs, Nong & Jimmy quickly became a beloved dining destination.
The restaurant’s signature dish, BBQ crab, became a local favorite almost overnight, drawing diners from all corners of the city to savor its smoky, sweet flavor. Over the years, the restaurant’s reputation grew, with its menu expanding to include a wide array of Thai BBQ dishes and traditional Thai delicacies, all while maintaining the authenticity and soul of southern Thai cuisine.
At the heart of Nong & Jimmy’s success is its carefully curated menu, which showcases the finest seafood and traditional Thai ingredients. Each dish is prepared with the same passion and attention to detail that has defined the restaurant since its inception.

Salt Baked Tilapia

The BBQ section of the menu remains the star, featuring items like Salt Baked Tilapia, a whole fish grilled to perfection with a crisp, salty crust.

However, it is the BBQ Crab, the restaurant’s signature dish, that truly exemplifies Nong & Jimmy’s mastery of Thai BBQ. The crab, grilled over an open flame, takes on a unique smoky flavor that complements its natural sweetness, making it a must-try for any seafood lover. Paired with a tangy Thai dipping sauce, that’s make it heavenly.
In addition to the BBQ offerings, Nong & Jimmy’s menu also features a selection of classic Thai dishes that showcase the rich diversity of Thai cuisine.

Miang Kham

The Miang Kham Appetizer, a traditional Thai snack where betel leaves are wrapped around a mixture of nuts, herbs, and a sweet-sour sauce, offers a refreshing start to any meal.

Seafood with Golden Egg Salad

The Seafood with Golden Egg Salad brings together fresh seafood in a creamy, golden egg dressing that is both rich and flavorful.

The opening of Nong & Jimmy’s second outlet near TRX, just a five-minute walk from popular landmarks like Uniqlo and Muji, has made the restaurant even more accessible to both locals and tourists. Despite its expansion, the restaurant has remained true to its roots, continuing to serve authentic southern Thai dishes that have been its hallmark for the past 30 years. For those seeking a more intimate dining experience, Nong & Jimmy’s Imbi outlet offers a private dining room, perfect for special occasions or gatherings, with a minimum spend of RM1,500..
