A Taste of Modern Tradition: Dim Sum Station in Penang

August 5, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Dim Sum Station 点心栈港式点心餐厅, nestled in the Promenade of Bayan Baru, Penang, offers a delightful dining experience that blends the charm of traditional dim sum with modern culinary practices. During our recent trip to Penang, we had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant, which stands out for its unique approach to serving dim sum breakfast.

Unlike the traditional dim sum restaurants where pushcarts laden with a variety of treats move around the dining area, Dim Sum Station adopts a more contemporary concept. Here, everything is made in the kitchen upon ordering, reminiscent of the practices seen in hotel dim sum restaurants. This approach ensures that each dish is fresh and made to order, offering a distinct culinary experience. The restaurant’s comfortable setting, complete with a water bath for steaming your dim sum, adds to the modern dining ambiance.

While Dim Sum Station’s menu is not extensive, it features classic favorites such as egg tarts, siew mai, prawn rolls (har gao), and char siew pao. The slightly higher prices are justified by the quality of the food. The ingredients used are fresh and dense, contributing to the overall flavor and texture of the dishes. However, some might find the dim sum slightly greasier than usual.

A highlight of the menu is the variety of steamed dumplings served in bamboo steamer baskets. Apart from the usual har kow and siew mai, the restaurant also offers dried scallop dumplings and prawn & spinach dumplings, all in generous portions. These dumplings stand out for their rich flavors and satisfying textures.

Pao enthusiasts will find a small yet delightful selection of steamed buns at Dim Sum Station. The menu includes sweet options like ling yong pao and lau sa pao, alongside the savory char siew pao, which is filled with moist barbecued pork—a popular favorite among patrons. Despite the limited variety, each pao is crafted with care, ensuring a delicious bite every time.
