Yang Guo Fu @ Pavilion Bukit Bintang

October 6, 2023 by StrawberrY Gal

Yang Guo Fu (杨国福麻辣烫), the world’s largest Mala Tang chain with over 6000 outlets, has made its debut in Malaysia. Our recent visit took us to the outlet situated at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant boasts a clean and bright ambiance, creating a pleasant dining atmosphere

About Yang Guo Fu

According to the founder, Mr. Yang Guofu, he ‘discovered’ the dish during the 1990s in Harbin. At that time, Mala Tang was a fixed dish with ingredients such as bean sprouts, spinach, bean skin, and kelp. After quickly mastering the craft from a popular restaurant, he introduced a DIY mode that has since been well-received all over China.

Mr. Yang dedicated over two years to further enhance the dish by developing a unique soup base. This involved adding milk and rock sugar to the broth, transforming the traditional Sichuan spicy hot pot into a milky, flavorful soup that is now widely loved by all.”

The Concept

One of the unique aspects of Mala cooking is the freedom for consumers to select their preferred ingredients from a chiller shelf stocked with a variety of food, including vegetables, mushrooms, seafood, meats, processed foods, and an assortment of noodles. Customers pay for their chosen ingredients based on the weight, excluding the bowl’s weight. With a wide variety of choices, ranging from vegetables and mushrooms to meat, noodles, and seafood, there’s something for everyone.

At Yang Guo Fu (YGF), patrons can customize their dining experience by choosing from three preparation styles: spicy mala beef broth, tomato broth, and mala ban (dry). Similar to MLXG, customers can also adjust the spice level. For those unsure, starting with 小辣 (mild spice) is recommended. YGF provides condiments, allowing diners to add more chili later if they desire more heat.

The mala ban is the dry version featuring chili sauce (made from various northern China’s chilies) and peanut sauce. Chili and peanut sauces are served on the side, providing the flexibility to adjust the flavor to personal preference. While the taste is unique, personal preferences may vary.

The beef soup option offers a more appetizing experience, with the soup effectively infusing into the ingredients, creating a delightful blend of flavors.

For those seeking a distinctive meal experience, a visit to Yang Guo Fu is recommended
