3 Food Photography Tips For the Perfect Picture

March 14, 2019 by StrawberrY Gal

When it comes to food, I could say food photography perhaps can be the hardest or the easiest as you are photographing something static. And of course, we cant finished with just one shot but we do it with many shots usually and picked the best to show.  And here, we are sharing with you 3 tips of getting your food picture taken beautifully as we are visiting one of the Malaysian’s favorite outlet – Sepiring at Alamanda Shopping Centre. The restaurant brings you with the harmonious blend of flavours that makes us all ‘uniquely Malaysian”

Tip #1 : Invest in a Good Prime Lens
We have tried many lenses in taking food and prime lenses does the best job. I have started to use with the 50mm f1.8 lenses and also 24-70 f2.8 lens for most of my food photography.

And I noticed a huge difference when I am in the dark environment, my 24mm f1.4 had made a big difference. With the lower f (aperture), it will actually capture more lights and details, and also creating a more bokeh background which actually makes your photos more beautiful.

Tip #2: Say No to Front Flash
No matter which camera are you using to snap your pictures, never use the camera’s in built flash.  They will definitely won’t bring up the overall photos pretty but they create a dull, unreal, and funny coloured to your dish as well.

Tip #3: Don’t be afraid to move your plate around
There are times when the food served may not look appetizing, and what we always do is take out some of the ingredients, retouch them again to show our readers what’s there inside the bowl. Such as  the bowl of curry laksa, we usually take them in two different shots where one of it with the ingredients and one would be digging all the way from your bowl.

You would never know which is nicer and more appetizing. You can move the plate around too to get your best angle of photographing your food. As we are photographing both the Nyonya Laksa and Passembur, you can find a few angles we took.

When we took the flatlays, you can see all the gracious ingredients laying on the table which includes the taobok, shredded chicken, prawns, pieces of fish cakes, bean sprouts, min leaf and also the shredded cucumber.

During the photoshoots, we also tried their signature dishes which is the Nyonya Nasi Ulam with Ayam Percik. Love their combination from both worlds of Terengganu and Kelantan; and it is amazingly lovely. The nasi ulam which is made in house where the steamed rice is mixed with various spices from the pegangan leaves, together with spices. Mixed with shredded herbs such as daun kaduk, pucuk gajus, onions and more. They are topped with a salted egg and keropok lekor. The dish comes generously huge and of course very appetizing too.

This is always my all time favourites. During my younger days, my grandmother loves to cook this dish and we only get to have it when we have additional family members. This turmeric glutinous rice is served with the creamy fragrant chicken curry at the side. Even though is a pretty heavy meal, the curry chicken which comes thick and aromatic which makes it delicious. And, this is my favourite choice.

Of course, don’t miss out their Asam Laksa, and many more of their signatures at Sepiring too. And now you can stand a chance to win RM 600 worth of Voucher from Sepiring, The Chicken Rice Shop and NY Steak Shack  ( 3 winners). And the other 30 Winners stand  a chance to win a RM50 voucher from Kenny Roger’s Roaster.
