Manja @ Old Malaya : Pamper Ever Senses of Yours!

August 3, 2017 by StrawberrY Gal

With the beautiful location, the word – Manja had captured my attention.  The meaning behind “manja” means pamper is how the name come from. When you are here, you will definite being pamper till the fullest
The refurbishment from the pre-war showlots, Manja brings you with the cozy feel of its interior. And even the exposed brick wall is maintained and for good reason. And we had understand from the owners that the walls in Manja are over a hundred years old, being the same ones that held up the building when it was first constructed over a century ago.
Walking in the restaurant, I am indeed being “pampered” by loads of good food here. For first timer, Manja’s Menu will definite to bring you to another lever where it layers the Malaysian flavours and textures with the influenced from other places round the world. As Chef Navin who love travelling around captures the best and make a twist with it.

Borneo Coconut Tuna (RM48)
A marriage made in the Manja Kitchen between a timeless tuna tartar and classic Spanish ceviche using line caught tuna from Sabah and showcasing the local flavours in it. I love how it is done where the flavours comes simply delicious with the complete flavours in it. We love the chunky bites of nuts added together with the tuna where it brings us with the fragrant blend of taste too. Sides with the crispy homemade potato chips.

Bayam & Escargot (RM38)
A brave combination I could say where the tempting escargots cooked with the baby spinach and curry leaf in a cream and lobster butter, topped with the crispy garlic chips and served in a jar. The escargot comes simply juicy and burst in the mouth with each bites and the creamy baby spinach is such a good spread to enjoy. Perfectly done and enjoy them till the fullest with the buttered baguette.
Prawn & Passionfruit Salad (RM 38)
A refreshing blend of taste where the fresh greens together with the prickled onions and topped with the grilled sea white prawns from Sabah. Drizzled with the passion fruit dressing. The hint of sweetness together with the light combination of sour from the passion fruit comes simply addictive and delicious.
River Lobster Thermidor (RM 138)
Addictively delicious with the distinctive flavours, one can enjoy the wild freshwater lobster thermidor with a lemon lobster butter linguine. tied together with a Manja romesco dusted with parmigiano reggiano.  I am indeed loving with the dish which comes simply addictive and nice!

Oishi Sakana (RM 98)
For those who are looking for some delicious fish delights, Oishi Sakana is one of my favorites here. Manja cured Unagi, together with the smoked sashimi grade salmon and marinated line caught yellow fin tuna on a bed of Japanese local herb rice which is folded through with roasted mushrom, then lightly dressed with a tamarind dressing served with avocado and chili oil. It is simply delicious and tempting with the sweet flavours from the unagi. Nicely done!
Gunda Gunda (RM 77)
Help your self with the delicious and fragrant savoury steamed coconut rice here. Hiding below a bounty from the water of Sabah, you can find loads of Seafood variety from the golden brown crispy calamari, piquant braised prawns, anchovies, mussels, avocado and a selection of condiments in it. We are really impressed with the dish and even with a full tummy, we can complete this dish with a burp!
Ends your meal of course with the delighting desserts. Have yourself served with some sweet stuff here that will obviously will make you order for more.
Kaya & Cheesecake (RM 33)
Enjoy the heavenly slice of the organic local cream cheese cake topped with their own house made kaya, served with the milk candy, raspberry coulis and local botanicals.  the dish comes impressively good and delicious and i love their homemade kaya that comes with it. Nice one.

Old Malaya Tea Time (RM 33)
Enjoy your personal way of tea time. Have the Manja version of the typical Malaysian tea time that served with the rastali banana and toasted coconut fritters. They are lightly drizzled with the chestnut honey and salted caramel kaya. Sides with their  unique and delicious house churned Teh Tarik Ice Cream to complete the experience.
Sit down and have a chat with and get relax here. Sipped some lovely alcoholic drinks specially prepared here.
Dawn of the Dragon (RM 29)
Have this lovely cocktail built on  a hibiscus infused gin, sweetened with Manja Rose Syrup, fortified with egg white for creaminess and garnished with a sliced of dragonfruit.
G & R (RM 32)
For those who prefer some citrusy sweet delights and yet a balanced concoction, have the G&R. The combination of rum and guava juice shaken with a drop of lemon, gomme, Manja made orange bitter and an egg white to create a smooth flip style drink that goes down too easily.

Spirit of Borneo
Have one of the signature here where the local chili infused tuak is shaken up with Manja made bitter that delivers an additional spiced heat, while the egg white, lime and elderflower syrup form a silky refreshing and rich body sensation.
Overall Manja do surprises us with the awesome menu and we are coming of course for more of their dishes. Impressive one!
