KOWLOON SHANGRI-LA, HONG KONG LAUNCHES A NEW RANGE OF MOON CAKES IN ADDITION TO TRADITIONAL AND AUSPICIOUS GOODIES

September 10, 2015 by StrawberrY Gal

This year, the Michelin two-starred Shang Palace at Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel, Hong Kong offers a selection of elegantly created moon cakes, including the brand-new 30-year Mandarin Peel and Red Bean Paste Moon Cakes.  A range of hampers brimming with festive goodies and fine food is also on offer to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on 27 September 2015.

30-year Mandarin Peel and Red Bean Paste Moon Cakes

Inspired by the traditional dessert Boiled Sweetened Red Bean Soup, this creative moon cake makes its first debut this year at Shang Palace.  Chef Mok uses Mandarin peel – also known as one of the “three treasures” in the Canton province of China – and sweet mashed red bean to create this new concoction.

Mandarin peel is traditionally used to soothe cough and improve digestion.  The older the peel, the stronger the flavour and the higher priced it is.  Nowadays, 30-year mandarin peel is much sought after because it is hard to find aged peel of more than 10 years.  Its zesty flavour is well complemented by the sweetness of red beans.

Mini Snowy Moon Cakes with Durian Paste

This delectable creation is brought back by popular demand and is believed to be the ultimate treat for durian lovers as it is made with only the finest D24 durian.  Imported from Malaysia, D24 durian is of premium quality with bitter-sweet yellowish plump pulps and a creamy, yet dry texture.  Its richness contributes to the snowy moon cake’s smooth filling and gives it a strong, fruity and distinctive aroma.

Chiu Chow Moon Cakes with Pandan Leaf, Yam Paste and Salty Egg Yolk

Created meticulously by Chef Mok, this moon cake is infused with the fresh extract of pandan leaves imported from Singapore.

“This delectable concoction is filled with sweet yam paste and encased in a puff pastry skin that is infused with refreshing pandan fragrance.  The colour of pandan leaves also gets into the skin to give the moon cakes a light tint of green and makes it stand out from the traditional range of moon cakes.  I hope this new twist will give the traditional Chiu Chow Moon Cake a unique flavour,” said Chef Mok.

Traditional Moon Cakes, Festive Goodies and Hampers

Also gracing this year’s moon cake selection are Mini Pineapple Paste Moon Cakes with Mashed Egg Yolk, the ever-popular Mini Crispy Custard Moon Cakes with Mashed Egg Yolk and a choice of traditional flavours.  Two types of hampers brimming with festive goodies and fine food are also available.

Helping Children Shine – Moon Cakes for Charity

To brighten the lives of some children with special needs and help them realise their potential, the hotel has again joined hands with Heep Hong Society to present charity moon cakes.  Same as last year, the proceeds from the sale of every box will go to Heep Hong Society’s Children Training Fund and benefit the children in need.  Containing four pieces of selected traditional moon cakes with lotus seed paste and double egg yolks, each box is wrapped with beautiful drawings representing blessings sent from the children

All moon cakes are made from traditional and innovative recipes.  The variety of moon cakes available is as follows:
