Penang’s storied landscape just gained a new jewel. After a meticulous restoration, the 1926 Heritage Hotel has officially relaunched under The Unlimited Collection by The Ascott Limited. Located on the historic Jalan Burma in George Town, this former British colonial residence has been transformed into a “living chapter” of the city’s history—blending 1920s Anglo-Malay architecture with the sophisticated comforts of 2026.
Where Heritage Meets Modern Luxury
The hotel’s crisp white and beige façade pays homage to its roots as a residence for British administrative officers. Inside, the design is a love letter to Old Penang:
The Lobby: Features a stunning French-inspired straw marquetry art wall depicting the signature palm trees and panthers.
Straits Suite: An expansive sanctuary featuring a separate living area and study for the discerning traveler.
Heritage Garden Patio Room: A 52 sqm ground-floor retreat with a private outdoor patio that leads directly to the lush, tropical pool area.
A Culinary Journey at “Root House by Gēn”
The heart of the hotel’s dining is Root House by Gēn, a Chinese bistro led by the acclaimed Chef Johnson Wong (whose restaurant Gēn recently re-entered Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026). The menu explores the evolution of Chinese diaspora flavors, blending tradition with local Malaysian ingredients. For a more casual vibe, guests can head to The Heritage Collection by Daily Coffee or unwind with a curated cocktail at U-Bar.
