Marini’s on 57, founded in 2012 by dining and entertainment entrepreneur Modesto Marini, recently released its Sunset Hours Vol. Two album, compiled by Chris Coco and Steve Miller (Afterlife) following up its release of last year’s Sunset Hours Vol. One, which was compiled by Jose Padilla in conjunction with the second anniversary of their daily Sunset Hours sessions.

The album was made available digitally the world over on platforms such as iTunes, Google Play, Juno, Spotify, etc. since yesterday, 8 June 2015 ahead of it’s announcement today, which features an original track by Chris and Afterlife entitled Sunset Hours (Marini’s Remix).
Sunset Hours Volume Two album launch will take place in Kuala Lumpur today featuring Chris at Marini’s on 57 and followed by a global launch party in Ibiza, Spain on 9 August 2015 featuring Chris Coco, Pete Gooding, Phil Dockerty and Jose Padilla.
Modesto Marini said, “I am proud of this album especially compiled by Chris Coco and Afterlife, two legendary DJs in their own right and is a great follow up to last year’s Volume One. My most favourite is the track by Chris and Afterlife called Sunset Hours (Marini’s Remix), which will be our anthem for sure. I’m confident that Volume Two will be another jewel in our crown.”
The outlet has carved a niche in the luxury, entertainment and fine dining industry in Asia since its inception and also recently announced globally its partnership with fashion doyen Anna Fendi to exclusively distribute her range of wines. It is the epitome of life at the top and now it follows through its commitment to share that experience to the world via Sunset Hours Vol. Two.
The Sunset Hours series is the music compilation inspired by this amazing location and last year’s Volume One featured the story-telling selections of Ibizan legend José Padilla, weaving a perfect mellow, melodic, Balearic and deeply electronic musical tapestry which was greatly received and successful. Which is why for 2015, two of the world’s finest chilled DJ/Producers, Chris Coco and Afterlife join forces to present Volume Two.
Chris said, “We picked the music from a bank of classic tunes that we love to play out as well as putting the call out for new music from our producer/artist friends. We have tried to make an album that will, first of all, enhance the atmosphere at Marini’s on 57, but that also pushes the idea of what a chillout album should be. So hopefully it’s a mix of the familiar and the new and exciting all sequenced into a stimulating musical journey. Afterlife and I have produced a track especially for this album though. It’s called, no surprise here, Sunset Hours (Marini’s Remix). It was a great chance for us to custom make a tune for a very special location.”
Chris and Afterlife’s track selections join the dots between generations and genres with a depth and breadth of musical knowledge. Their blurring of musical boundaries is both inspired and inspiring from Club des Belugas’ (one of the leading Nu-Jazz bands in Europe) interpretation of 1950’s American composer, conductor and progenitor of exotica music, Les Baxter’s Jungle Flower, to jazz drum master Christian Prommer’s cover of Mr. Fingers’ (Larry Heard) seminal house classic, “Can You Feel It”; from the gorgeous musicianship of newly discovered Irish artist Micko Roche. Chris and Afterlife dig back to the 1970’s to unearth the sophisticated mellow tones of French singer Vincent Delerm and then look to the future with a brand new track from Jose Padilla.
Another name to look out for is San Francisco’s DF Tram, represented here with Mystery (featuring keys by Spacetime Continuum’s Jonah Sharp), taken from his forthcoming debut solo artist album Illegal Lingo. The inclusion of Fresh In My Mind by Brazilian and fusion influenced, A Forest Mighty Black (one of the few outposts for jazzy downtempo music in Germany) represents a sterling piece of B-side 12” vinyl crate digging from 1994 (Compost Records).
Chris and Afterlife flex their own production muscles on their title track Sunset Hours (Marini’s Remix). The distinctive bossa nova vibes of Italy’s Nicola Conte follow, before the focus shifts to USA’s John Beltran’s Esperanto – a truly stunning creation from the techno/jazz maverick – and the drifting, mellow melodies of Nick & Samantha’s Escapology. The Past Present Organisation takes movie soundtracks, jazz and exotica from the 60’s and 70’s and wraps them up in contemporary styling, Rififi being a perfect example here.
A complete masterstroke is the set finale to end all finales’ that comes in the form of a totally off-the-wall version of the jazz standard (originally written in 1954 by Bart Howard) Fly Me To The Moon from Japanese San Franscisco resident Coppé.
The ability to compile such a diverse, exotic and stimulating album as Sunset Hours Volume Two is rooted in long and diverse careers for both Chris and Afterlife. Chris is a tastemaker, DJ, broadcaster, producer, music curator, musician and journalist. His syndicated, weekly Melodica electronic music radio show is an essential source for the finest diverse chilled music selections. As a respected DJ since the acid house explosion of the late 80’s, his sunset/beach sets are laid-back and eclectic, and are something special to experience. His music has been featured in acclaimed TV series such as House, Nip/Tuck and Sex and the City amongst many others.
Afterlife is a multi-tasking artist/DJ/label boss of great renown. The most played artist in Ibiza last year, his music a perennial soundtrack at the beach bars and anywhere into lush, lilting, chilled and totally saturated sounds of impeccable taste. He is the sunset phenomenon – the purveyor of the finest romantic and melancholic mood music. His chill classics have featured extensively as highlights throughout the on legendary Café del Mar compilation series and his many artist albums all stand as benchmarks for the finest chilled music. Having played the sunset set at a multitude of parties and around the world in the most exotic locations, Afterlife is also a masterful chilled DJ.
