EDITOR PICK: TOP 5 POON CHOI IN KLANG VALLEY

February 16, 2015 by StrawberrY Gal

Poon Choi or Poon Choy is one of the famous item to try off and the dish is originated from Hong Kong.  It may also be found in different parts of Hong Kong. It is served in wooden, porcelain or metal basins due to its size and communal style of
consumption.

It is believed that this dish is invented back during the late Song Dynasty and tWhen the Mongol troop s nvaded Song China, the young Emperor fled to the area around Guangdong Province and Hong Kong. To serve the Emperor as well as his army, the locals collected all their best food available, cooked it and because there were not enough containers put the resulting dishes in wooden  washbasins. In this way, Poon Choi was invented.

Poon Choi includes ingredients such as pork, beef, lamb, chicken, duck, abalone, ginseng, shark fin, fish maw, prawn, crab, dried
mushroom, fishballs, squid, dried eel, dried shrimp, pigskin, beancurd and Chinese radish.

Due to the respect villagers pay to their guests, there is a relatively small amount of vegetables in Poon Choi.Poon Choi is special in that it is composed of many layers of different ingredients. It is also eaten layer by layer instead of “stirring everything up”, but impatient diners may snatch up the popular daikon radish at the bottom first using shared chopsticks. And this round, our editor picks comes out with 5 poon choy to go for this Chinese New Year asides from our Yee Sang.

1. YOU MI QI

The huge pot of poon choy served in the huge bowl is awesomely good. I love how the poon choy is served where all the ingredients are well layered. You Mi Qi had a selection of 7 types of Poon Choi to try of from RM 188 to RM 999 where the ingredients are different. For this round, we tried the Fatt Choy Poon Choi (RM 428/10 pax) where the poon choy comes with
the Braised Fa Cai with Dried Oyster, YouMiQi Chicken, Tiger Prawn, Slice  Conch, Sea Cucumber, Roasted Pork, Lotus Root, Mushroom, Broccoli, and also Baby Chinese Vegetable. The poon choy we had is not much with luxury items but the poon choy is simply traditional and every mouthful is flavourful and nice. We love the Roasted Pork that comes crispy and moist and the Lotus Root where it is well infused with flavours from the sauce. Nice one. If you are looking for a more traditional poon choi , YouMiQi is a choice

Fish stomach (
鱼鳔) and Coral clam (红珊蚌). The Treasure Pot is indeed an indulgence for those families who are small and
it’s portion is just nice for a family of 4 -5 pax. I love the treasure pot as it is filled with the flavourful gravy and I just need a rice to accompany with it. What’s make it so nice is the premium ingridients are all so fresh and value for money
