DINING FOR PROSPERITY AT SHANG PALACE, SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, KUALA LUMPUR

The Year of the Goat trots in on 19 February 2015, but the celebration begins early at Shang Palace, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

From 19 January to 5 March, diners can look forward to dining for prosperity on the special Chinese New Year menus prepared by Shang Palace Chinese Executive Chef Tan Kim Weng.

There is an a la carte menu, with dishes full of symbolic expressions of good fortune, prosperity, happiness, wealth and abundance for Chinese New Year.

In the a la carte menu is Poon Choi or Braised Premium Assorted Hot Dish served in a claypot, Braised Bird’s Nest Soup with Crabmeat and Shrimp Balls, Traditional Stuffed Sea Cucumber with Minced Chicken, Canadian Lobster Duet Preparation, and Wok-fried Freshwater King Prawns with Supreme Soya Sauce, among other dishes.

There are also five Prosperity menus of eight or nine courses: Great Prosperity Set Menu at RM178++ per person (minimum 4 persons), Rich Fortune Set Menu at RM368++ per person (minimum 4 persons), Happy Reunion Set Menu at RM1888++ per table of 10 persons, Wealth Treasures Set Menu at RM2888++ per table of 10 persons, and Immense Wealth Set Menu at RM4888++ per table of 10 persons.

Of course any Chinese New Year lunch or dinner on the set menus at Shang Palace would begin with Yee Sang, and end with Steamed Traditional Ninko with Shredded Coconut and Sesame Balls.

Chef Tan has also prepared six varieties of Yee Sang – Korean Snow Pear Yee Sang, Crispy Fish Skin and Jellyfish Flower Yee Sang, Salmon Fish Yee Sang, Japanese Hokkigai and Sweet Prawn Yee Sang, Sliced Abalone Yee Sang and Australian Live Lobster Yee Sang.
