IN SEARCH OF THE BEST SOCIAL LUBRICANT | THE GREAT SINGAPOREAN COFFEE TRAIL

April 3, 2014 by StrawberrY Gal

Coffee is the one thing that helps kick-start our mornings at home and in the office. There is the good ‘ol “Kopi Peng” (iced coffee) or the more sophisticated cappuccino and skinny, soy latte. This addictive drink is not only consumed in the mornings nowadays, it is also the drink that keeps you up through the day and into the night, rushing out that proposal or report before the deadline.
Aside from that, coffee is also the catalyst of great ideas and conversations. It has evolved into a social lubricant that is vastly available and vitally important in meetings and social encounters, whether business or leisure.
In Singapore, coffee is a culture widely celebrated. At almost all times and especially on weekends, majority of the nation finds themselves sitting about in a cafe, socializing or reading a book.  Cafes are a good place to catch up with old friends and take a breather. This month, we share with you where to find some of the hidden coffee joints and great cafes in Singapore.
Loysel’s Toy

If you are looking for a cozy place to write your next novel or just to gain some inspiration, the Loysel’s Toy Café is the place to be. Named in homage of the father of the commercial coffee machine, Edward Loysel De Santais, Loysel’s Toy lives up to their name by producing some of the best coffees in Singapore. Supplied by the famed specialty coffee gurus Papa Palheta, the quality and taste of the coffee is rich and deep. The skill of the baristas is also evident in the intricate Latte Art they produce.
Where: Loysel’s Toy, 66 Kampung Bugis

Necessary Provisions Cafe
First, the folks started a pop up coffee place known as Smitten Café at The Quayside. Following after was the opening of Necessary Provisions Café at the West side of Singapore. As their tagline says it “Honest Food Beer Coffee Tea”, this is yet another amazing spot hidden in Bukit Timah residency area for an aromatic cup of coffee. A favorite spot for locals to grab brunch on a lazy weekend too, so be sure to arrive early to get a spot in this rustic café!
Where: 21 Eng Kong Terrace, Singapore, Singapore 598993

Chye Seng Huat Hardware
The exterior of this coffee shop looks like an old hardware shop, and most wouldn’t even blink an eye while walking by. But the locals know of this hidden hip coffee bar that features roaster, coffee school and private coffee tasting room. Chye Seng Huat offers exceptional coffee, it goes without saying it is a Papa Palheta establishment.
Where: 150 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore 207563

Maison Ikkoku
Maison Ikkoku is a Japanese themed building tucked away in Arab Street, with a laid-back and indie vibe. Above the odd fusion, they take coffee very seriously. Well-roasted fresh ground beans brewed by experienced baristas. After an espresso and driven with caffeine, why not climb to the top floor for an amazing view of the glittering domes of Sultan Mosque?
Where: 20 Kandahar Street, Singapore 198885
Tel: +65 62940078
Liberty Coffee
Unlike your ordinary coffee shop, this shop does not have regular opening hours. A small store known for their fantastic own brew of Liberty coffee beans and Gula Melaka Pandan Cake! A must try for all coffee and cake lovers!
Where: 131 Rangoon Road, Singapore 218409
