For many Malaysians, comfort food is more than a dish; it’s a memory that warms both heart and home. For some, that comfort comes in the form of a simple yet timeless Chinese remedy — Steamed Pear with Rock Sugar (冰糖雪梨).
This traditional dessert, often made to soothe coughs and sore throats, has long been a staple in Chinese households.
“I used to pretend I had a cough just so my mum would make it,” she laughs. “Of course, she knew — but she’d still prepare it, smiling all the way.”
Light, fragrant and naturally sweet, the dessert combines Asian pear, rock sugar, red dates, and goji berries. Slowly steamed for hours, the pear turns tender and translucent, while the broth becomes delicately honeyed — soothing to sip and nourishing to the body.

Ingredients:
1 Asian pear, cored and sliced
1½ tbsp rock sugar
2 red dates (seeds removed)
1 tbsp dried goji berries
Method:
Place all ingredients in a small heatproof bowl or jar. Steam gently or slow-cook for about six hours until the pear softens and the syrup turns aromatic. Serve warm.
Simple, wholesome and full of love, this humble dessert proves that the sweetest comforts often come from the simplest recipes — and from the hands that prepare them.
