The LEGO Group, in partnership with Box of Bricks, announces the new LEGO Certified Store in Malacca

December 11, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Known for its cultural charm, Malacca has marked yet another historic first with the grand opening of its first-ever LEGO® Certified Store. Following its official opening at AEON Bandaraya Melaka today, the 1,302 sq. ft store is situated in the heart of the Baba Nyonya cultural heritage district.

Experience endless imagination and creativity

As part of the brand’s ethos to nurture play, the LEGO Group is proud to integrate local cultural traditions into its play experience, offering a unique opportunity to explore Malacca through the joy of building. This landmark opening will feature an impressive first-of-its-kind 3D model of a Nyonya lady built entirely from LEGO bricks, a Pick and Build Wall, a Graphic Pillar, a Play Table, and a Build a Minifigure station – reinforcing the LEGO Group’s commitment to creativity, culture and fun.

Commentating on the latest LEGO Store opening, Nina Patricia Da Costa, General Manager of Singapore, Malaysia and APAC Travel Retail at the LEGO Group said: “For history and cultural enthusiasts, this LEGO Certified Store in Malacca is a new destination and attraction in itself. At the LEGO Group, we focus on the intended customer experience and the extension of play. With the various ethnicities in Malaysia, we are proud to be able to incorporate Malacca’s local cultural heritage into colourful LEGO bricks, further bringing LEGO play up a notch.”

The 3D Nyonya lady model, a labour of love by Alen Zhang, the group’s model builder specialist, captures the traditional charm of the Baba Nyonya heritage intricately through LEGO bricks. Zhang, along with his passion for models and building skills shared, “Creating this model was not just about assembling bricks; it was about telling the story of the local culture, which the LEGO Group wanted to honour and also celebrate the Malacca city’s vibrant cultural identity through the colourful bricks.”

In addition to the Nyonya lady, the new store will feature a stunning Graphic Pillar showcasing iconic historical landmarks, including the red-hued Stadthuys and the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum, both intricately crafted from LEGO bricks. For the first time, visitors can marvel at these creations alongside LEGO minifigures dressed in traditional Baba Nyonya attire, holding local kuihs, making ondeh-ondeh, taking selfies as tourists, and enjoying trishaw rides through the scenes. The pillar, with its four-sided design, captures the vibrant essence of the heritage.

In keeping with the LEGO Group’s dedication to interactive play, the LEGO Certified Store will offer several exciting features. These include the Pick and Build Wall where customers can explore a wide range of LEGO bricks in various colours and shapes, offering endless possibilities for new creations. For hands-on fun, visitors can enjoy the Play Table, where they can build and create at their leisure. Last but not least, the Build a Minifigure station lets guests create personalised minifigures including the option to craft a miniature version of themselves.

This store opening is part of the LEGO Group’s ongoing retail strategy to offer a wide range of innovative products that blend shopping with entertainment. The new store exemplifies the brand’s ethos of play, which has captured the hearts of families and children for generations, now extending into Malacca’s shores.
