10 Places to Visit In Hokkaido

September 17, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is known for its stunning natural landscapes, rich culture, and seasonal beauty. Here are 10 must-visit places in Hokkaido:

Sapporo

The capital of Hokkaido, famous for the annual Sapporo Snow Festival in winter, Sapporo Beer, and its delicious ramen. Odori Park, the Clock Tower, and Mt. Moiwa are popular spots to explore.

Furano

Known for its breathtaking lavender fields in the summer, particularly at Farm Tomita. In winter, it becomes a skiing destination with stunning powder snow.

Otaru

A picturesque port town with charming canals, historical buildings, and seafood markets. The Otaru Music Box Museum and glassware shops are also highlights.

Hakodate

Visit Hakodate for its historic waterfront, the famous Hakodate Morning Market for seafood, and the stunning night view from Mt. Hakodate. The Goryokaku Star Fort is also a historical landmark worth exploring.

Asahiyama Zoo (Asahikawa)

One of Japan’s most famous zoos, particularly for its engaging animal exhibits. It’s especially known for the Penguin Parade during winter.

Noboribetsu

Famous for its hot springs and the volcanic Hell Valley (Jigokudani), Noboribetsu is a perfect spot for relaxation and soaking in therapeutic waters.

Shiretoko National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage site, this park is a paradise for nature lovers. It offers hiking, wildlife spotting (including bears and deer), and stunning views of unspoiled wilderness.

Lake Toya

A scenic caldera lake with a year-round display of fireworks in summer and snow activities in winter. The surrounding hot springs and views of Mt. Usu make it a popular retreat.

Biei

Known for its rolling hills and patchwork flower fields, Biei offers one of the most stunning rural landscapes in Japan. The Blue Pond and Shirahige Waterfall are iconic spots to visit.

Daisetsuzan National Park

Hokkaido’s largest national park, offering fantastic hiking trails, hot springs, and opportunities to view wildlife. It’s especially popular for fall foliage and alpine flowers in summer.

Hokkaido is beautiful in every season, from skiing and snowboarding in winter to flower festivals and scenic drives in summer!
