Yun Nans Restaurant @ Pavilion Bukit Bintang

August 7, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Nestled in the vibrant Pavilion Bukit Bintang, Yun Nans Restaurant brings the rich culinary heritage of Yunnan, China, to the heart of Malaysia.

As China’s largest casual restaurant chain with over 200 outlets worldwide and more than 1 million servings of their Signature Chicken Soup sold, Yun Nans is a testament to Yunnan’s diverse and flavorful cuisine. Our visit to Yun Nans was nothing short of a culinary adventure, and here’s a detailed account of the delectable dishes we had the pleasure of trying.

Steam Pot Chicken Soup

One cannot visit Yun Nans without trying their iconic Steam Pot Chicken Soup, also known as Qi Guo Chicken. This dish is not just food; it’s a cultural experience. Listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Yunnan, the soup is prepared in a hand-made Jianshui clay pot using a special breed of black-feet chickens. The preparation process is meticulous, with each pot crafted by hand to achieve the perfect boccaro for the signature chicken soup.

The soup is made with Mat Grass Chicken, affectionately called the ‘Hermes of Chickens,’ and cooked for a staggering four hours daily without adding a single drop of water. The result is a rich, flavorful broth that captures the essence of Yunnan cuisine. The taste is robust yet delicate, with a depth of flavor that warms your soul. Each sip brings forth a blend of herbal notes and the natural sweetness of the chicken, making it a standout dish that you must try.

Stir-Fried Wild Porcini Mushrooms

Another highlight of my meal was the Stir-Fried Wild Porcini Mushrooms. These mushrooms are handpicked from the lush forests of Yunnan and are known for their nutritional benefits. The dish is a symphony of earthy flavors and a delightful chewy texture. The mushrooms are cooked to perfection, with a slight crisp on the outside while remaining tender inside. The seasoning enhances the natural umami of the mushrooms, making each bite an absolute pleasure.

Beef Stew in Copper Pot

The Beef Stew in Copper Pot is a hearty dish that exemplifies comfort food at its finest. The beef is incredibly tender, having been simmered for hours in a rich, savory broth. The flavors are deep and well-balanced, with the beef absorbing the spices and herbs to perfection. Each spoonful is a burst of warmth and satisfaction, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a comforting and flavorful meal.

Crispy Bursting Tofu with Spicy Sauce

For tofu enthusiasts, the Crispy Bursting Tofu with Spicy Sauce is a must-try. The tofu cubes are expertly fried to achieve a crispy exterior while maintaining a soft and silky interior. The spicy sauce adds a kick to the dish, enhancing the tofu’s mild flavor with a burst of heat and tanginess. It’s a delightful contrast of textures and flavors that will leave you craving more.

Signature Cross-Bridge Rice Noodles

Rice noodles hold a special place in Yunnanese cuisine, and the Signature Cross-Bridge Rice Noodles at Yun Nans are a testament to this tradition. The rice for these noodles comes from the Hong Factory in the suburbs of Kunming, known for producing high-quality rice. The noodles are silky smooth, with a perfect bite. The broth is rich and flavorful, with a depth that speaks of hours of careful preparation. This dish is nostalgic and comforting, a true representation of Yunnan’s culinary heritage.

Poached Seafood Rice in Prawn Broth

The Poached Seafood Rice in Prawn Broth is a seafood lover’s dream. The rice is cooked to perfection, absorbing the rich flavors of the prawn broth. Each grain is infused with the essence of the sea, complemented by the succulent pieces of seafood. The broth is deeply flavorful, with a perfect balance of sweetness from the prawns and a hint of brininess. It’s a dish that showcases the bounty of the sea in every mouthful.

Grilled Delights

Yun Nans also excels in grilled barbecue, with unique seasoning that sets it apart. The Grilled Pork Trotters with Spices are a revelation. The trotters are grilled to achieve a crispy skin while the meat remains tender and juicy. The spices add a depth of flavor that complements the natural richness of the pork, making it a delightful treat.

For fish lovers, the Charcoal Grilled Seabass with Lemongrass is a must-try. The seabass is grilled to perfection, with a smoky flavor from the charcoal and a fragrant hint of lemongrass. The fish is tender and flaky, with a subtle sweetness that pairs beautifully with the aromatic lemongrass.

Chilled Brown Sugar Jelly with Rose Pure

To end the meal on a sweet note, the Chilled Brown Sugar Jelly with Rose Pure comes highly recommended. The jelly is light and refreshing, with the sweetness of brown sugar balanced by the floral notes of rose. It’s a perfect palate cleanser that leaves you feeling satisfied and refreshed.

With over 200 outlets worldwide, Yun Nans has made its mark as a purveyor of authentic Yunnan flavors. Their first stop in Malaysia at Pavilion KL brings the rich, diverse, and flavorful cuisine of Yunnan to us.
