Café Colombo: An Authentic Sri Lankan Dining Experience at TRX

August 21, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Located in the heart of TRX,  Café Colombo  offers an immersive dining experience that captures the essence of Sri Lanka’s vibrant culinary heritage. The café blends colonial elegance with modern charm, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that serves as the perfect backdrop for a feast of authentic Sri Lankan flavors.

Café Colombo’s menu  is a tribute to the island’s diverse cultural influences, featuring traditional Sri Lankan dishes with culinary imprints from Portuguese, South Indian, Chinese, and Indonesian settlers.

This harmonious fusion is masterfully curated by  Chef Eranga , who draws inspiration from his own Sri Lankan heritage and the cherished memories of cooking with his grandmother and mother. His passion for authentic Sri Lankan cuisine shines through in every dish, with each one delicately balancing spices and herbs that evoke the island’s rich, layered flavors.

Tacos Pulled Crab

Starting the meal with a twist, the  Tacos Pulled Crab  introduces diners to a fusion of Sri Lankan flavors with modern presentation. Fresh, tender crab is seasoned with a blend of spices that highlight the natural sweetness of the seafood, encased in soft taco shells that provide a delightful contrast with each bite.

The  Cashew Curry

The  Cashew Curry  is another one of our favourites. It comes with the milder option of curry and what makes it delicious is the tender carrots and creamy cashew nuts in a gentle coconut curry. The dish comes simply fragrant and offers a soothing, creamy backdrop with the cashews adding a satisfying texture.

Vegetable Cutlets

We love the Vegetable Cutlets where they come with the   golden brown and crispy on the outside, reveal a soft, spiced vegetable filling. They arePaired with a tangy tomato-chilli dip, this appetizer provides a hearty, satisfying start to the meal without overpowering the palate.

Prawn Curry

The  Prawn Curry  is a highlight, showcasing Negombo-style cooking with perfectly cooked prawns immersed in a rich, aromatic curry. The velvety sauce is perfect for soaking up with rice or roti, offering a true taste of Sri Lanka’s coastal cuisine.

Jaffna Curry Mud Crab

For those who enjoy bolder flavors, the  Jaffna Curry Mud Crab  is a must-try. The mud crab, bathed in a fiery Jaffna curry, is both sweet and succulent. The spice level is bold yet balanced, offering an exhilarating culinary adventure for those who crave heat.

Kochchi Chicken

The  Kochchi Chicken  stands out with its creamy, smoky flavor profile. Tender chunks of chicken are coated in a rich sauce with just the right amount of spice, while the accompanying curry leaf chutney adds an earthy note that enhances the dish’s depth.

Briyani Chicken

As for the Briyani Chicken  is a fragrant and flavorful affair, with perfectly cooked basmati rice layered with tender chicken and aromatic spices. Every bite offers a harmonious blend of flavors, embodying the essence of Sri Lankan biryani.

Lamprais

Only available on weekend only , we enjoyed the   Lamprais  is a traditional Sri Lankan delicacy that is well worth the wait. This dish, consisting of meat and curry wrapped and baked in a banana leaf, is a sensory feast. As the banana leaf is unwrapped, the aroma is intoxicating, and the tender meat and richly spiced curry come together in perfect harmony.

Sweet Appam

For dessert, the  Sweet Appam  is a delightful end to the meal. Soft and fluffy with crisp edges, the appam is filled with a luscious coconut custard sweetened with jaggery. The balance of sweetness and the creamy texture of the custard provide a comforting and satisfying finish, leaving a lingering sweetness that’s just right.

Café Colombo  offers more than just a meal – it provides a journey through Sri Lanka’s diverse culinary heritage, with each dish telling its own unique story through the expert hands of Chef Eranga. Whether you’re a fan of bold, spicy flavors or looking for something more delicate and comforting, Café Colombo offers an unforgettable dining experience that celebrates the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan cuisine.
