LIGHTS OUT FOR STARWOOD HOTELS & RESORTS, MALAYSIA: HOTEL GOES DARK FOR EARTH HOUR 2014 AS PART OF WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT FOR ENVIRONMENT

It’s lights out for Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Malaysia.

The Starwood hotels and resorts in Malaysia will join millions around the world in turning off lights for Earth Hour 2014 to illuminate a powerful message about environmental awareness and action.

This special event is created by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and will take place on March 29 at 8.30pm local time. Last year, Earth Hour 2013 became the biggest Earth Hour event with a record of 150 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. People across the globe from all walks of life will turned off their lights with one same purpose – to save our planet.

This year’s theme is “Earth Hour Blue.” With that in mind, Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Malaysia will activate a range of energy-saving measures during Earth Hour.

Participating hotels and resorts will turn off exterior signage lighting; dim or turn off non-essential interior lighting as well as use candlelight in public areas such as restaurants and bars. Alternatively, each of the hotels and resort also has other exciting activities planned to engage guests to join this good cause:

The Westin Kuala Lumpur



Joining in millions around the world to combat the threat of global warming and the need to reduce carbon emissions, The Westin Kuala Lumpur will be in darkness from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on 29 March 2014. A candle lighting ceremony will take place at the lobby to signify the start of Earth Hour, together with a few other Earth Hour awareness events, including a candlelight “unplugged” entertainment at the hotel’s lobby with servings of signature green mocktails to embrace the hotel’s responsibility for environmental sustainability. Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur

Similar to its sister properties, Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur will also be switching off all non- essential lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. Four Points by Sheraton Penang



The new member of the Starwood family, Four Points by Sheraton Penang will also join forces in this global movement with some engaging activities with the in-house guests. During that special event from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, guests will be encouraged to switch off their room lights and head down to The Best Brew Patio for an Earth Hour Cocktail session where guests can enjoy complimentary canapés and free flow of wine, beer or soft drinks on that night. Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral



Taking part in this energy saving initiative for the first time, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral invite all guests for a special cocktail reception at w xyz bar during Honesty Hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on this memorable day. During the event, guests patronizing this venue will be invited to pledge on any amount of speciality cocktails that they would like to enjoy on that night. All proceed will be channelled to plant trees to save the environment which will be held later on the same year. The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort, Langkawi



On the Northwest of Langkawi, the eco-friendly Andaman resort will be dressed in Tiki Torches from the lobby leading up to the beach, during the hour. Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu



Strategically located in the heart of KK, Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu will also be in darkness for an hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm for a good cause. The hotel will be having a special buffet at Circle Restaurant featuring delectable local specialities cuisine with the use of organic and sustainable ingredients. A special organic vegetable shooter will be served as an aperitif for all guests. The buffet is priced at RM 92++ per person and SPG members are entitled to a 20% discount off the total food bill.

In addition to that, the hotel will also be organizing a special cocktail party at Pool Bar from 6.30 pm to 9.30pm.This cocktail party will see a group of special guests from the local underprivileged children welfare organization come together with in-house guest’s. Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan



Further up north of Sabah, Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is all set to be part of this global movement with a list of exciting activities. As part of the Care for Community program, the hotel’s associates will hold a “Gotong – Royong” activity to spruce up surrounding areas of the hotel.

On the night of the event, the hotel will have limited lighting in support of energy savings. In-house guests that participate in the movement by not leaving their key card in the room can redeem free “green” mocktail at The Best Brew Bar. At the same venue, the hotel will also be having a “Tapas Madness” buffet from 8.30pm to 9.30pm that will feature 10 to 15 choices of “East Meets West” exquisite finger food. The buffet is priced at RM45++ per person (food only) and RM59++ per person (inclusive of house pouring draft beer, wine, chilled juice or soft drink). SPG members are entitled for 20% discount off the total food bill. To top it all, guest can enjoy a Buy 1 Free 1 drinks during Happy Hours from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

Not to be missed, be entertained by a special guest – Peter Lau, a local jazz drummer who will showcase his jazzy percussion tuned form his unique drums that is specially made out of recycled items. This special performance will be held at The Best Brew Bar from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Hailing from Labuan, Peter Lau came from a strong musical background with almost 20 years of experience from the Jazz industry. Mainly focusing on light and easy jazz music, he has performed at various prestigious events such as the Kota Kinabalu Jazz festival, Korean International Jazz event, and numerous corporate events to name a few. His creative effort in making use of recycle items into an innovative product is recognized by the Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (IYM) and the entertainment industry both local and internationally. Last year, Earth Hour broke records to cement itself as the largest voluntary action for the environment. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

This year will mark Starwood’s sixth annual participation in Earth Hour, making it one of the largest worldwide companies to make a pronounced global statement with a voluntary hour of darkness. Earth Hour is just one of the many ways Starwood acts in support of its 30/20 by 20 goals, which is the company’s commitment to reduce energy consumption by 30% and water consumption by 20% by 2020 across its entire portfolio.
