AMAN TOKYO REVEALS DETAILS OF ITS SERENE AMAN SPA

June 2, 2015 by StrawberrY Gal

An exclusive sanctuary high above the atmospheric whirl of Japan’s vibrant capital, Aman Tokyo occupies the top six floors of The Otemachi Tower and offers guests a unique experience
of this global city. Providing panoramic, bird’s eye views of the surrounding Tokyo landmarks, as well as easy access to all points of interest in the city, the hotel has dedicated two floors – over 2,500 square metres – to its extensive Aman Spa and fitness facilities.

The largest and most comprehensive hotel spa in Tokyo, the spa offers an integrated approach to wellness combining spa treatments, movement and relaxation in a serene, Zen-like setting. Situated on the 33rd and 34th floors, it has been designed to reflect the hotel’s contemporary Japanese aesthetic with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing breath-taking views.

A tranquil retreat, far removed from the urban bustle below, it features eight double treatment rooms each with a dressing room, treatment area, steam shower and bathroom. There are also a number of private relaxation areas where guests can take time out for reflection before or after treatments, whilst enjoying a
selection of teas and traditional snacks. The Aman Spa offers a heated swimming pool with expansive views of the city, from Shinjuku to
Mount Fuji on the horizon. The 30 metre pool is flanked by generously-spaced double daybeds, ideal for passing a few hours with a book or simply gazing at the magnificent skyline. Changing rooms feature steam rooms, traditional Japanese and Western showers, and hot Japanese baths. Fitness facilities include the spacious, light-filled Fitness Centre, equipped with the latest in cardiovascular and weight-training machinery from Technogym and Life Fitness, as well as TRX and spinning bikes.

There is also a Yoga & Pilates Studio which offers Allegro Reformers and other Pilates-specific apparatus. Guests can book individual or group classes with experienced Pilates and yoga instructors, or personal training sessions with in-house personal trainers.
The spa philosophy at Aman embraces a holistic approach to wellness through movement, treatments and therapies, relaxation and nutrition. Local wellness practices are also incorporated, enriching the cultural aspect of the spa experience, as well as offering the benefits of traditional
remedies and therapies. The wellness traditions of Japan – from Zen philosophy and meditation, to Kampo, the study of Japanese herbs known to have healing properties – all acknowledge that nature and balance are key factors in maintaining good health. Aman Tokyo has drawn on this
understanding to create a comprehensive spa treatment menu incorporating Kampo herbs and Aman’s unique and indulgent, chemical-free product range.
Based on the knowledge and wisdom of ancient philosophies and natural healing traditions Aman Spa’s product range works holistically to nurture the skin and enhance overall well-being. Made using the highest quality natural ingredients known for their anti-ageing and balancing qualities, Aman’s skincare products penetrate deep into the skin to nourish and rejuvenate. Plant essences and extracts have been carefully sourced from around the world for their purity, potency and therapeutic qualities. Suitable for both men and women, they represent a lifestyle choice of simple luxury
recognising nature’s healing touch.

As with every Aman Spa, the Tokyo spa menu features a number of locally inspired seasonal Spa Journeys which can be tailored to individual needs. Reflecting the traditional practice of Misogi, the water-based act of purification undertaken before any journey, guests are invited to use the hot
baths or steam facilities to relax and unwind prior to beginning their treatment. Each spa journey begins with a foot bath using seasonal Kampo herbs with mineral sea salt, and a breathing ritual using camphor tree oil, known for its relaxing and calming properties.

The practice of purification and connection with one’s inner self is paramount in Japan, and the camphor tree is an important symbol of strength and reflection. Symbolic of finding one’s path in life, they are traditionally grown in the gardens of temples, where their scent is believed to calm and bring emotional balance. The spa’s Signature Journey is influenced by the concept of the temple garden, including a full body scrub using fine camphor powder and Japanese clay, and a 90-minute body massage using kuromoji (Japanese spice bush) and rice oil with shiatsu and Western massage techniques. Other treatments include facials, reflexology, a range of massages, body wraps and finishing touches such as manicures and pedicures.

While Aman Tokyo is very much a destination unto itself, providing a range of dining venues, a residents’ library and business facilities in addition to the Aman Spa, the hotel also provides guests with personalised guided excursions to natural and cultural attractions in the area.
