Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee @ Penang

December 30, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee (百年路咖喱面) has long been a household name when it comes to authentic Penang curry mee. Located at Khuan Pin Hotel (环滨旅社), just at the junction of Lorong Seratus Tahun and Lebuh Naning in George Town, this humble stall has earned its reputation over the years for serving up some of the most flavorful and iconic curry mee in Penang.

What makes their curry mee stand out is its traditional Penang-style preparation. The dish features a light, aromatic curry broth that’s rich in flavor yet not overly thick. The bowl is a delightful combination of yellow Hokkien wheat noodles and thin rice vermicelli (“bee hoon”), which creates a satisfying textural contrast. I personally love this combination as the bee hoon soaks up the curry broth, while the yellow noodles provide a more substantial chew.

This curry mee is then generously garnished with a variety of toppings that add depth and character to the dish. You’ll find plump shrimps, fresh cockles, tender slices of cuttlefish, creamy pig’s blood cubes, and the ever-absorbent tofu puffs (“taupok”), which soak up all the curry goodness. The final touch is a spoonful of their signature sambal chili oil—a must for those who crave heat. The sambal adds a kick of spiciness and an extra layer of depth to the already rich broth.

One thing that keeps me coming back is the generous portion of tofu puffs. The tofu acts like a sponge, absorbing the savory broth, creating little pockets of flavor with each bite.

For those seeking an authentic, no-frills curry mee experience in Penang, Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee is a must-visit.
