6 Singapore Festivals You’ll Want to Attend

May 29, 2023 by StrawberrY Gal

Most visitors fly to Singapore to enjoy world-class attractions, experience breathtaking gardens, and marvel at architectural gems. But if you are looking for other ways to make your vacation more memorable, consider including festivals in your itinerary. Aside from helping you gain a deeper insight into Singapore’s culture, these local celebrations offer opportunities for you to experience something different, explore unique sites, and meet new people.

That said, you may need to do more than scout airfare tickets and book Singapore airport accommodation on your next trip. You should also plan your travel around one of the many interesting and colourful festivals in the Lion City to make the most of your vacation. If you are looking for ideas, here are six exciting festivals worth attending:

Chinese New Year (Between January and February)

Also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year is the perfect opportunity to immerse oneself in a one-of-a-kind Chinese cultural experience and appreciate Singapore’s multicultural heritage. Head to Chinatown and get ready to be enchanted by sparkling lights, extravagant decorations, and intricately-designed Chinese lanterns lined up on the streets. Even shopping malls, offices, and public spaces are adorned with black and gold ornaments, which many Chinese people believe bring good fortune and happiness.

Have your fill of delectable food and festive goodies, and shop to your heart’s content in the annual Chinese New Year Bazaar. You can also participate in the River Hongbao event to see giant lanterns, enjoy thrilling amusement rides, and delight in live stage performances showcasing the best of Chinese culture. To cap off the experience, be sure to check out Singapore’s unique Chinese New Year tradition, the Chingay Parade—a display of elaborate floats, dancing dragons, and cultural performances involving Singaporeans of various ethnicities.

Singapore International Festival of Arts (May to June)

Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) is a month-long event of presentations celebrating arts and culture delivered through various mediums, from dance and music to theatre and visual arts. Do you love watching live performances and seeing diverse interpretations of ideas and concepts using art? If so, you will undoubtedly have your fill since SIFA features numerous performances, shows, and exhibits by local and international artists in various places in Singapore.

i Light Singapore (June)

Organized by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and held in Marina Bay, i Light Singapore is Asia’s most prominent sustainable light festival. Here you will see larger-than-life artworks created using energy-efficient lights and eco-friendly materials. These stunning and colourful light art installations are displayed in public spaces for free to entertain and inspire everyone to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Remember to take plenty of social media-worthy pictures and learn to savour the moment, as every piece in the exhibit has a profound story to tell.

Singapore National Day (09 August)

Are you travelling in August? Perhaps you can schedule your trip near Singapore’s National Day celebration to witness how the Lion City roars to life in patriotic colours of white and red as countless national flags flutter in every corner to commemorate Singapore’s independence. Aside from the decorations and the nationalistic vibe, attending Singapore’s “birthday” will give you a better appreciation of how this tiny island with no natural resources managed to become one of the world’s most economically stable and wealthiest countries. Catch the National Day Parade live to experience a breathtaking spectacle of multicultural performances, military exhibitions, an aerial parade, and a stunning firework display.

Singapore Food Festival (August to September)

Besides offering breathtaking sights and exciting attractions, Singapore is also known for mouth-watering dishes, thanks to its multicultural culinary heritage. That said, what better way to make your vacation a feast for the eyes and stomach than by attending the Singapore Food Festival—a gastronomic event guaranteeing a unique and satisfying dining experience? Participate and indulge in a wide selection of delectable local and international cuisine, artisanal food and drinks, and other delightful treats you may not experience anywhere else.

Singapore Night Festival (August)

The Singapore Night Festival is a remarkable opportunity to experience a unique side of the Lion City. Head to Bras Basah.Bugis Precinct, where the event takes place for two weekends in August, and watch the district transform into an enchanting and magical place after the sun sets. Admire the electrifying display of colourful lights and projection mapping artworks that make the facades of cultural buildings come alive. Take a stroll on the streets to enjoy live musical performances, satiate your appetite with tasty street food, and dance your worries away as you exchange friendly smiles and laughter with those around you.

Whether you are interested in exploring different cultures, religious festivities, or unique events in general, Singapore has them all. Be sure to look through the options above or search for other exciting local celebrations to find interesting festivals that fit your schedule. That way, you can elevate your travel experience and make your stay even more meaningful and extraordinary.
