Maximal or Minimal – Which End of The Style Spectrum Are You

August 29, 2019 by StrawberrY Gal

Hotels.comTM today unveiled the world’s first half and half hotel suite, the ‘So Extra So Chic’ suite – a room split literally straight down the middle, where half is uber-maximalist and half ultra-minimalist. Now there is a real reason to fight over which side of the bed you want!

Hotels.com has paired with Johnny Wujek, the ‘so extra’ style powerhouse behind the likes of Katy Perry and Mariah Carey’s iconic looks, with Kaitlyn Ham, the ‘so chic’ minimalist fashionista, to create this unique suite at The Curtain, London. Check out this video to see more about the suite.

Whether you love bold tropical prints or crisp white linen, this room ticks all the style boxes. The ‘So Extra So Chic’ suite is available to book from today* until the 29th October 2019 exclusively on Hotels.com and is tucked away in one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods, London’s Shoreditch.

New research from Hotels.com reveals ordinary is over! If you’re not living life to the max, you’re nowhere. It’s all about ultra-individualistic style, with millennials more than twice as likely as their parents to want to be seen as unique (22% vs 8%)**. And attention-loving millennials would prefer to be fashionable (28%) than on-trend (25%), stand-out (23%) or vibrant (9%). Malaysian millennials prefer a more laid back vacation (63%) over a city break (27%) and comfy white slippers together with a robe (37%) than an extravagant chandelier (20%) or patterned wallpaper (23%).

The two ends of the style spectrum, minimalism and maximalism, are all about individualism and living your best life. Minimalism with a touch of scandi-chic has been ‘slaying’ it for years, but new trend in town – maximalism – gives permission to clashing styles, textures, patterns, bonkers prints and colours all coming together in one space.

Johnny Wujek’s So Extra side of the hotel suite features golden ornaments, monkey lamps and a luminescent mini bar, curated by clashing prints, layered colourful rugs and wallpaper that could send you cross-eyed. Contrasted with pared back, clean lines and minimalist monochromes on Kaitlyn Ham’s So Chic minimalist side, where a statement white leather lounge chair, bespoke line-drawing art, décor pieces in muted tones and a plush wool throw finish the look.

Minimalism is still ‘on fleek’, with Malaysian millennials loving it for being chic (7%) and classy (19%). But, a whopping third (37%) of people also classed the Scandi style as basic – ouch! At the other end of the spectrum, stand-out style loving millennials dig maximalism, which they describe as stylish (48%), extra (32%) and wacky (23%). Top celebrity style icons were revealed as Neelofa (49%), Nur Fazura (43%), Emma Watson (36%), David Beckham (55%), Johnny Depp (41%) and Awal Ashaari (34%).

Even when it comes to travel and hotels, looks count. The style of the hotel (16%) is more important to Malaysian millennials than what bars and restaurants are nearby (13%) but definitely not more than the price of the hotel (60%) and whether breakfast is included (24%).

Commenting on the room, Johnny Wujek said: “I wanted my side of the room to feel exciting and EXTRA but also comfy and cozy. It’s a touch of overgrown Great Expectations with a dash of California casual. Style is all about self-expression and, clearly, I have a lot to express. Baby, you better stand out in this world.”

Speaking about her minimalist half of the suite, Kaitlyn Ham commented: “I took inspiration from modern mid-century design to create a space that feels open and calming. All the pieces were chosen for their style and functionality with a focus on quality. The space should feel modern and light yet have an inviting warmth that makes it feel like home.”

Jessica Chuang, Regional Marketing Director, Greater China, Southeast Asia and India, the Hotels.com brand says, “No matter if it’s shades of grey or an explosion of patterns, we love that people want to stand out with their unique style even when they travel. At Hotels.com, we’re all about trying new things, so with the So Extra So Chic suite, style-loving travellers out there can experience both ends of the minimal, maximal spectrum. Now all that’s left is picking which side of the bed you’re on!”

The #SoExtraSoChic hotel suite, exclusive to Hotels.com, is now live at The Curtain Hotel in London from RM733 and available to book now until 29th October 2019 (subject to availability). Find out more about the room here.
