Peter Vann`s “Vegetalis” is at the Historic Hotel Chesa Salis

June 20, 2017 by StrawberrY Gal

Peter Vann’s latest series “Vegetalis” is a riot of texture and shapes as he uses Engadin nature motifs in large-format pictures against a background of bold colours. The modern twist of his art lends an interesting contrast to the historic ambience of Chesa Salis.

Built in 1590, the Chesa Salis is an architectural gem. This enchanting hotel boasts many historic, design features with engraved stucco decorations on the windows and walls; cross vaults, wooden beams as well as original period furniture that reflect its rich past. In direct disparity with its history but expressed with style and flair are antiques of a more modern nature. Showcased in this distinctive setting are unique design pieces such as the George Mulhauser “Mr. Chair” armchair with ottoman (1955), the Organic Chair – Charles Earnes & Eero Saarinen (1940) and the Emperor Imperia table lamp from the 1950s.

With the addition of the Peter Vann’s exhibition, beautiful local art is now adorning these stately walls. His “Vegetalis” collection is a tribute to the flora of the Engadin region which uses flowers, stems and even fibres mounted on strongly coloured backgrounds. The result is as simple as it is spectacular and makes the large-format images appear like a cascade of form and colour harmonies. For connoisseurs of Peter Vann’s career, this technique is not unknown as in the seventies and eighties he made world-famous promotional photos for exclusive car brands. Since moving to the Engadin, he has left the world of glamour behind him and has concentrated on nature and the small essentials in life.  Archaic plants, almost banal and often concealed to the eye, have been so artistically arranged and photographed it is as if they were the real kings of the mountains. Simple but stunning….

The “Vegetalis” exhibition will be open until the end of the winter season 2018 in the historic rooms of Chesa Salis. Opening hours of the hotel and restaurant can be found at www.chesa-salis.ch.
