TOP THINGS TO DO IN SHANGHAI THIS SUMMER CURATED BY MANDARIN ORIENTAL PUDONG, SHANGHAI

May 24, 2016 by StrawberrY Gal

Whether travelling from another city or exploring one’s hometown, the pleasant days of summer are an ideal time to discover Shanghai. With its stunning riverside location, Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai makes a perfect basecamp for urban explorers who can book the hotel’s One More Night accommodation package to make their big city experience even more enjoyable.

Here are Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai’s recommendations for things to do in Shanghai this summer:

Make Disney Dreams Come True
Shanghai Disney Resort is finally about to open on 16 June 2016. Located in Chuansha New Town of Pudong, the park’s multiple attractions include the world’s tallest Enchanted Storybook Castle, an Alice in Wonderland Maze and the Seven Dwarves Mine Train. Its live entertainment features performances of The Lion King and music-packed Mickey’s Storybook Express, which will follow the longest-ever parade route in a Disney theme park. The concierge at Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai can assist guests with tickets and transport information.

Witness a Russian Cinematic Masterpiece
The 19th Shanghai International Film Festival will take place from 11 to 16 June.  This year’s ‘Tribute to Masters’ will showcase a series of films commemorating the 30th anniversary of Russian director, Andrei Tarkovsky’s death. His films include Solaris, Stalker, The Sacrifice and Mirror.  These and his other masterpieces, Nostalghia, Andrei Rublev, Ivan’s Childhood and The Steamroller and the Violin, will be screened during the festival.

Discover the Dragon Boat Festival Like a Local
The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu jie, is honoured on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. This year it falls on 9 June and will be celebrated with a long holiday weekend. Guests can witness the exciting spectacle of the annual Suzhou Creek dragon boat races, or participate in some paddling at The Shanglong Dragonboat Club. Also, travellers can taste traditional zongzi, a pyramid-shaped parcel of sticky rice with meat or sweet red bean wrapped in reed or bamboo leaves. This classic Duanwu jie snack can be found at most local wet markets during the lead-up to the festival.

Savour Summer Dining, ‘Jiang Nan’ Style
Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai’s Signature Chinese restaurant Yong Yi Ting showcases local ‘Jiang Nan’ (south of the Yangtze River) cuisine presented by celebrated Shanghainese chef, Tony Lu. The cookery of Shanghai and its neighbouring provinces, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, are renowned for their delicate seasonal flavours, to which Chef Lu adds an enticing touch of modernity. The summer dining menu features dishes made with seasonal vegetables, such as cattail, local spinach and lotus root. Other delicious and nutritious summer ingredients will include loofah, bitter melon, lychee, enoki mushroom and pearl barley.

Restore Your Summer Glow at The Spa
Guests have an opportunity to re-energise themselves with a 90-minute massage at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai. The massage begins with a complimentary 30-minute Refined Body Glow exfoliation treatment using a blend of ground lotus seeds, pepper and Chinese dates that leaves the skin feeling silky soft. During the stimulating massage that follows, therapists apply oil to the body with their elbows and forearms to dissolve aches and strains, and reveal a refreshed summer glow.

Enjoy an Extra Night
Guests can treat themselves to a little extra indulgence during their Shanghai adventure by booking the One More Night package, which includes a complimentary third night. The package is available from 5 June 2016 until 5 September 2016. Rates start from CNY 1,800.
