AN ENCHANTING, ECO-FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS AT GRAND HYATT MACAU

November 27, 2015 By StrawberrY Gal - Food News Leave a Comment

Tis the season to be jolly and Grand Hyatt Macau is proud to present An Enchanting Eco-friendly Christmas. Guests arriving at the hotel will be attracted by a collection of unique Christmas trees rising from the fountain at the entrance, inside the lobby and throughout the hotel. The merry ambience sets the scene for memorable year-end celebrations, including a grand buffet at mezza9 Macau and holiday afternoon tea set at Lobby Lounge, along with gifts at the Lobby Christmas Boutique and the Grand Countdown Party to usher in 2016.

Championing a healthier planet, Grand Hyatt Macau decided to take a purposeful approach to Christmas decoration. Instead of the usual plastic and tinsel that impact our environment and usually end up as landfill by New Year, Grand Hyatt Macau chose to repurpose objects used around the hotel and creatively transform them into dazzling Christmas trees and other ornaments.

The brainchild of General Manager Paul Kwok, the Enchanting Eco-friendly Christmas theme took a full year to plan, prepare and actualize. Grand Hyatt Macau’s Florist Master Steven Lu designed seven different types of Christmas trees using 100 percent repurposed materials, ranging from glass vases and wine bottles to kitchen utensils and party hats, and illuminated them with low-wattage LED lighting.

With 15 years of expertise in floral design, Steven Lu was the ideal artist for this challenge. He spent several months visiting different departments to search for appropriate recyclable materials. The seven Christmas trees are crafted from the following recycled materials: 13,000 glass vases; 3,000 recycled wine bottles collected from banquets and events; 600 party hats; 500 stainless steel kitchen utensils; 300 pastry boxes; 300 soft sheep toys; and 200 floating glass bowls.

“This is the first time in my career that I’ve been involved with such a unique Christmas Tree Project. Every step was challenging yet exciting. The entire hotel team put a great deal of effort into the decorations, from collecting and matching materials and experimenting with designs, to cleaning all the pieces, shaping materials and incorporating the LED lighting,” says Steven Lu, Florist Master, Grand Hyatt Macau.

“Christmas is a time for love and care – toward each other and our planet. Our 2015 Grand Christmas Tree Project took an entire year to create and the results are truly remarkable. Not only do the decorations look spectacular, but they deliver an important message about cutting down on unnecessary waste and operating in a sustainable fashion for the good of our planet. We’re already in the festive spirit and looking forward to all the celebrations we have planned for Christmas and New Year at Grand Hyatt Macau,” says Paul Kwok, General Manager, Grand Hyatt Macau.
