Earth Hour 2018 Celebration at Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

March 27, 2018 by StrawberrY Gal

Staying true to its commitment towards the environment, the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur celebrated Earth Hour 2018 with activities for hotel guests to mark the global climate change initiative.

All non-essential lighting in the hotel’s exterior, gardens, and restaurants were dimmed or turned off in a concerted effort to fight against global warming, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. The hotel’s laundry also ceased operations for one hour. Guests were encouraged to turn off non-essential lights in their rooms.

A candle-lighting ceremony was held in the hotel’s Garden where guests lit the candles, in support of Earth Hour. At Restaurant Lafite, a special 5-course candlelight dinner menu was created using sustainable produce for diners.

Shangri-La Hotel has always taken efforts to conserve the environment by saving energy and recycling its waste products. It was awarded with the ASEAN Green Hotel Award 2016-2018 by the ASEAN Tourism Forum for its efforts in meeting the environment policy and collaboration with community and green organisations.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts remains committed to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner whilst balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders.  In striving to be a leader in corporate citizenship and sustainable development, a corporate-level CSR Committee drives the company’s initiatives in the strategic areas of stakeholder relations, environment, health and safety, supply chain and employees.  These focus areas are unified under the umbrella brand of “Sustainability”, together with  Shangri-La’s core CSR projects “Embrace” and “Sanctuary”.  Hotel-level Embrace programmes focus on Shangri-La’s Caring People Project, which aims to promote the highest level of education and health support in underprivileged communities.  Sanctuary programmes concentrate on Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project, which promotes the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.  For more information, please visit the group’s CSR section on www.shangri-la.com.
