The time-honored ritual of afternoon tea has always been a cornerstone of high society within the House of Astor. However, a remarkable transformation is taking place at The Drawing Room inside The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur. Moving completely away from conventional floral patterns and predictable cake tiers, the luxury hotel has unveiled The Botanist’s Study Afternoon Tea—a high-end, immersive experience inspired by the layered landscapes of the nearby Perdana Botanical Gardens Kuala Lumpur. Conceived as a curated field exploration, the experience transforms the lounge into a quiet, interactive botanical laboratory. Guests dine amongst magnifying glasses, petri dishes, conical beakers, and specimen vessels, turning an elegant afternoon into a sensory journey where science and meticulous culinary craftsmanship quietly converge.

A Dialogue Between Science and Artistry
The menu is a collaborative masterpiece driven by Executive Sous Chef Mohd Sakhawi and Executive Pastry Chef Azizul Bistaman. Grounded in a philosophy of structural balance and technical precision, the duo treats each ingredient as an edible specimen of form and flavor.”We approached this experience as a dialogue between science and artistry, where each creation is shaped by precision and imagination,” shares Chef Azizul. “It is our intention to transform the familiar ritual of afternoon tea into something quietly extraordinary.”The Nine Botanical Landscapes ProgressionThe multi-course menu mimics a physical walk through the nine distinct environments of Kuala Lumpur’s iconic gardens:

First Course (Sunken Garden): The exploration opens with a focus on freshness, showcasing layered heirloom tomato textures.

Savory Delights: A progression of pristine, savory forms inspired by Perdana Lake, KL Bird Park, Herbs & Herbarium Garden, and Deer Park featuring poached prawn, smoked duck croquette, aromatic herbs, and earthy beetroot.
The Botanist’s Herbarium: A whimsical, intermediate pause highlighting preserved florals and botanical studies that bridges the savory and sweet halves.
Sweet Delights: A decadent visual bloom representing the Hibiscus Garden, Orchid Garden, Butterfly Park, and Perdana Canopy through sculpted contemporary pastries.
The Finale: Freshly baked plain and hazelnut raisin scones served alongside traditional clotted cream and a bright mixed berry jam.
To ensure a completely harmonious finish, the entire menu is paired with a freshly brewed pot of Janat’s Strawberry Tea, carefully curated to draw out the fruity and herbal undertones of each course
