What to eat on a game night and stay alert

April 22, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

Seasoned players know that epic game nights can last until sunrise. Whether you are playing Monopoly with your group of friends or indulging in some online slot games, you need to set the stage just right in order to stay alert all night long. So, how do you do that?

You start by choosing the game you want to play. Is that a board game? Is it a strategy game? Or perhaps an online casino game like poker, which is usually one of the most trusted picks for Malaysia and its residents? From iGaming to social games, there are plenty of options at your disposal.

Next up, extend an invitation to a few good friends, and provide some food and refreshments as a wonderful host that you are.

Don’t worry – you don’t have to make gourmet meals. Here are some snacks you should prepare ahead of time to maximize the fun, along with your energy levels.

Munch on tangy fruits

Game nights are usually associated with fast food and unhealthy snacks. But there’s no need to break your diet and eat thousands of calories in one sitting – unless that gives you pleasure. If your goal is to stay alert, you need to keep your taste buds awake, which calls for some tangy food items.

Apples, oranges, and lemons will keep you alert long enough to enjoy your gaming session to the fullest. These fruits will not only help you stay awake but also boost your immune system, as they are packed with vitamin C. Who would have thought that staying up late for a game night could be beneficial for your health?

Stay away from sugary foods

Many people believe that sugar acts like coffee, giving you an energy burst needed to sit through a long game night. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth, as you might soon find out after experiencing a ‘sugar crash’.

Have you even eaten a carb-rich meal? Wasn’t lying down with a full belly the first thing you wanted to do? That’s a completely natural reaction after eating carbohydrates, which cause sluggishness by raising your blood sugar levels. If all of that can happen from a carb-rich diet, imagine what happens once you snack on chocolate and muffins all night long. That’s why sugary foods are a big no-no.

Chew gum

Here’s a neat little trick for you whenever you sense those yawns coming on – chew gum. Gum itself won’t keep you full or nourished, but it will keep your mouth busy and prevent you from dozing off in the middle of the game.

The precise mechanism of how gum keeps you alert is still not entirely known. However, the reduction in sleepiness might be related to heightened cerebral activity on top of the pleasing mint flavor. Whether trying to stay alert for a night of studying or a night of gaming, chewing gum might be the key to your success.

Don’t rush through snacks

As much as you enjoy that fruit salad or salty, protein-packed chickpeas, the last thing you want to do is devour it all in one sitting. Instead, eat your snacks slowly, and make them last all night long – especially if you don’t have a lot of them.

Getting up to take a bite every once in a while will keep your body active, preventing drowsiness and brain fog. Besides, you’ll also get to avoid that unpleasant feeling of having a full stomach, which only makes you want to go to bed right away.
