Malaysia Airlines Recommences Daily Flights to the Maldives

August 5, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Malaysia Airlines proudly marked the recommencement of its inaugural daily flight from Kuala Lumpur to the Maldives today, a significant milestone that underscores its commitment to expanding its presence in key markets. Flight MH485, operated by the Boeing 737-800, departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) at 10:10 am, carrying a full load of 174 passengers. This direct flight, which lasted four hours and fifteen minutes, was warmly welcomed with a water salute upon arrival at Velana International Airport (MLE) at 11:25 am local time. The return flight is scheduled to depart MLE for KUL at 12:30 pm local time.
This new route marks Malaysia Airlines’ 13th destination in South Asia and is a testament to the airline’s strategic vision of connecting travelers to some of the world’s most captivating destinations. The last time Malaysia Airlines operated direct flights to the Maldives was in 2017. The recommencement of this service aligns with the airline’s commercial elevation journey, reinforcing its position as the gateway to Asia and beyond.
Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines from Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), expressed his excitement about the new route, stating, “We are thrilled to be flying back to the Maldives, which enhances our strategic vision of connecting travellers to some of the world’s most captivating destinations. By offering direct flights to the Maldives, we aim to position Malaysia Airlines as the top choice for those seeking both luxury and cultural richness. It also signifies a strategic initiative to solidify our standing in the luxury travel segment, showcasing our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of discerning travellers and strengthening our competitive edge in the market.”
The recommencement of the Maldives route is part of Malaysia Airlines’ broader expansion strategy, which includes the launch of three new destinations this year. Starting on 15 August, the airline will begin flights to Chiang Mai, Thailand (CNX), followed by daily flights to Danang, Vietnam (DAD) starting on 24 September 2024.
To celebrate the launch of the new route to the Maldives, Malaysia Airlines is offering special promotional fares from now until 31 August 2024. Under the theme “The Time for the Maldives,” all-in return fares start from USD 299 for Economy Class, with travel available until 30 March 2025. Additionally, travelers can take advantage of add-ons featuring a 10% discount on purchasing ancillary bundles, including value bundles, premium bundles, and the MH Traveller’s Trio bundle, which offers a standard seat, 10 kg of extra baggage, and access to the Malaysia Airlines Golden Lounge at KLIA.
The resumption of flights has been warmly welcomed by key stakeholders in the Maldives. Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), commented, “We are pleased to welcome Malaysia Airlines back to Velana International Airport. The reinstatement of this route to Malaysia, a popular destination for our travellers, strengthens regional connectivity. We are excited about the opportunities this partnership offers.”
Similarly, Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC), noted, “The resumption of direct flights between the Maldives and Malaysia via Malaysia Airlines is expected not only to boost arrivals but also to diversify our tourism base. Collaborative partnerships such as these underscore MMPRC’s commitment to strengthening connectivity and accessibility for our visitors from Southeast Asia and around the world.”
