Penang Branded Traditional Streetfood is bringing the Malaysian island’s most popular dishes to the Little Red Dot

June 4, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

This June, Penang Branded Traditional Streetfood, or Penang BTS, will touch down in Singapore with a flurry of authentic legacy recipes at the Mandala Club Singapore. Partnered with the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board and sponsored by internationally renowned Penang-born Lingham & Sons — known for their renowned Lingham Chilli Sauce, the first international edition of Penang BTS will bring the best the island has to offer to Singaporeans.

Founded in 2022, Branded Traditional Streetfood Enterprise was created in the spirit of celebrating hawker legacies and promoting the best recipes from Malaysia through international pop-up events. This edition of BTS brings six of Penang’s best-known hawkers together in a never-before-seen buffet spread.

In the lineup is Awesome Char Koay Teow by Ah Kuan, a third-generation master of the iconic fried noodle dish. An unmistakable pillar of Penang street food, this version of the fried noodle dish features large, juicy prawns and a generous dose of wok hei. Also making an appearance at Penang BTS is Assam Laksa @ Kek Seng Cafe — with 118 years of history and intensely savoury flavours in what is arguably one of the best iterations of the island’s deliciously fishy dish, and second-generation Ah Soon Kor Rangoon Road Hokkien Prawn Mee, well known for the spicy prawn and meat broth they’ve refined over their 50 years in the business.

Another hawker that will be featured at Mandala Club Singapore is Pulau Tikus Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng that has served its delicious dish of bouncy rice noodles topped with succulent duck slices since 1983. Included in the Penang BTS lineup is Grandpa Ong Penang Chee Cheong Fun who will be cooking up the local variation of the regional dish with its unique combination of chilli sauce, sweet sauce, “hei koh” (prawn paste) infused with peanut butter. And last, but certainly not least, joining Penang BTS is Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Delights who have been specialising in Nyonya cuisine since 1933. This restaurant has been synonymous with Nyonya cuisine since 1933 in Penang and will be introducing their Nyonya Salad made from a secret family recipe for the first time outside of its restaurant.

“We created Penang Branded Traditional Streetfood because we wanted to provide a platform for hawkers who may be well-known locally, but deserve recognition worldwide,” said Irene Boay, CEO of Branded Traditional Streetfood Enterprise. “While this June’s event is called Penang BTS, we eventually hope to also showcase famous hawkers from the rest of Malaysia through events that not only provide guests with easy access to a variety of dishes, but also pay homage to the long history of hawker culture in Malaysia.”

“Working together with Penang Branded Traditional Streetfood, we aim to bring the authentic taste of Penang to Singaporeans and encourage more locals to experience what Penang has to offer. The daily flights between the two cities makes it an ideal gateway for food enthusiasts with more than 75,000 Singaporeans visiting Penang in 2023. With this initiative, we hope to attract even more Singaporeans to Penang, not just for food but also to experience the rich culture and heritage of the island,” said Ms Mohana Murni, Deputy Director of the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board in Singapore.
