New Healthy Veggies Line Launched by De Lettuce B.E.A.R Featuring Southeast Asia’s First Selenium Bio-fortified Lettuces That Boost Immunity

May 24, 2023 by StrawberrY Gal

Get ready to take your healthy eating game to the next level with De Lettuce B.E.A.R – indoor vertical lettuce farming and hydroponics specialist, with the introduction of Southeast Asia’s first selenium bio-fortified lettuces.

Malaysia’s first agri-biotechnology service to introduce selenium bio-fortification in vegetables, De Lettuce B.E.A.R is looking to introduce an even healthier option to leafy green vegetables that provide Malaysian consumers with even more nutrients and health benefits.
“Our mission at De Lettuce B.E.A.R is to provide our customers with the most nutritious and healthy products possible. By introducing selenium Bio-fortified lettuce to Malaysia, we are not only delivering a game-changing product in vegetable nutrition but also helping to address the widespread deficiency of this essential micronutrient in our diets”, said JiaZhuang Chin, CEO of  De Lettuce B.E.A.R.
Globally, selenium deficiency is becoming a growing problem with estimates indicating over 1 billion people worldwide are affected by insufficient selenium intake. This is concerning as it could lead to a range of health problems, including an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, and other chronic conditions. Selenium bio-fortification is an effective strategy for increasing the selenium content of crops and thereby improving human health outcomes.
“With this in mind, we wanted to devise the best strategy to develop veggies that could address this nutrient deficiency in the most sustainable and organic manner. Thus our unique and ideal indoor vertical farming and hydroponic methods were developed. We meticulously control factors such as light, temperature, water flow rate, water temperature, and nutrient concentration to deliver optimum lettuce growth and produce that is packed with nutrients – especially selenium,” he continued.
By growing their crops in selenium-rich mediums through hydroponic techniques, De Lettuce B.E.A.R’s products contain 10 times more selenium than ordinary vegetables, ensuring that the human body can absorb a higher percentage of nutrients.
These selenium bio-fortified lettuces can lower cholesterol levels, improve vision, reduce inflammation, improve sleep quality, slow ageing, smoothen metabolism, lower blood pressure, strengthen bones, boost immune systems, prevent Alzheimer’s disease, prevent cancer, reduce anxiety whilst also hydrating the body and aiding in weight loss.
Specifically, De Lettuce B.E.A.R’s features a product range which includes Green Coral Lettuce, Mix Coral Lettuce, Green Butterhead Lettuce, Mix Butterhead Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, Baby Romaine Lettuce as well as ready-to-eat packs of Salad Mix with Ceasar’s Salad Dressing and Roasted Sesame Salad.
De Lettuce B.E.A.R’s products are also all-natural as well as free from pesticides and herbicides, making them safe for consumption. Through Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology indoor vertical farming, the lettuces are grown in controlled environments and harvested in just 39 days, making them both efficient and environmentally friendly.
The launch of the brand and showcase of the product line event held recently, also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between De Lettuce B.E.A.R  and Kasetsart University Thailand, the first agricultural university in Thailand. This partnership will see both parties collaborate to broaden knowledge and expertise within the agricultural innovation field.
“We are excited to share our knowledge and simultaneously learn from Kasetsart University, as we work together to drive innovation and deliver top-quality products that can help both nation’s citizens eat and live healthier,” JiaZhuang continued.
The official launch ceremony was also graced by Anwar Bin Tawe, Deputy Director of Commodities Development of Selangor Agriculture Department as well as Airul Asmiza,  Director of the Agricultural Engineering Division. Besides that, esteemed representatives from Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam were also present at the launch ceremony, which include Prihasto Setyanto, General Director of Horiculture from the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia, Prof Dr Duong Nguyen Khang, Director of the Research and Technology Transfer Center, Nong Lam University of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Dr Theerawit, from the Faculty of Agriculture of Kasetsart University, Thailand.
These nutrient-packed greens are now available at selected retailers across Klang Valley including selected HeroMarket and NSK Grocer outlets. De Lettuce B.E.A.R is committed to expanding the market and aims to reach 100 outlets by the end of 2023. And to sweeten the deal, they’re currently offering a free drainage crisper with a minimum purchase of 2 of any type of De Lettuce B.E.A.R lettuce boxes.
