The Samsung S23 : Small Yet Powerful!

April 4, 2023 By StrawberrY Gal - Gadget, Lifestyle Leave a Comment

For those looking for a smaller-sized smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is an excellent choice. Compared to Samsung’s latest models which tend to be larger and more unwieldy, the S23 is designed with portability in mind without sacrificing functionality.

Design

If you’re in the market for a compact smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is definitely worth considering. With dimensions of 5.8 by 2.8 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and a weight of just 5.9 ounces, it’s notably smaller than the S23+, which measures 6.2 by 3.0 by 0.3 inches and weighs 6.9 ounces. But don’t let its size fool you – this phone packs a punch in terms of features and quality.

One of the standout features of the Galaxy S23 is its sleek design and high level of attention to detail. The phone boasts a solid build quality, and everything from the side-mounted power and volume keys to the placement of the antenna bands feels purposeful and deliberate. The phone is both elegant and functional, with a minimalist design that is sure to appeal to those who prefer a more streamlined look..

Display

For those who are looking for a smaller phone, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is the perfect choice. It measures 5.8 by 2.8 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and weighs only 5.9 ounces, making it noticeably smaller than the S23+ (which measures 6.2 by 3.0 by 0.3 inches and weighs 6.9 ounces). However, despite its smaller size, it still boasts a premium design and build quality, with attention paid to even the smallest details such as the placement of the antenna bands and side-mounted power and volume keys.

The S23 features Gorilla Glass Victus 2 panels on both the front and back, with Samsung’s Armor Aluminum chassis providing additional protection. It is also rated IP68, meaning it can survive being submerged in water up to five feet deep for up to 30 minutes. While it supports HDR10+ content to improve the dynamic range in supported content, it does not support Dolby Vision.

With a maximum brightness of 1250 nits (or a boosted 1750 nits when watching HDR content), the S23 is easily usable in direct sunlight without needing to seek out shade. Its high-end Samsung display is bright, vivid, and detailed, making it great for watching TikToks and YouTube videos. However, the smaller display dimensions may be missed when watching shows on Netflix.”

Camera

The Galaxy S23’s camera is one of its standout features, boasting a powerful combination of three lenses: a 50MP main camera with dual pixel PDAF and OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera with a 120-degree field of view, and a 10MP 3x telephoto camera with OIS. This setup is identical to that of its predecessor, the S22 series, which was already praised for its exceptional camera quality.

The main camera is particularly impressive, with its 50MP sensor utilizing pixel-binning technology to combine multiple pixels together, resulting in improved detail and light. When combined with enhanced AI image processing, the camera produces sharp, detailed shots even in challenging lighting conditions. The AI image processing uses a segmenting method, which enhances the individual segments of an image to produce well-lit, detailed shots in both well-lit and low-light environments.

Furthermore, the camera’s HDR capture capabilities are top-notch, maintaining a high level of detail in both bright and dark areas, even in challenging lighting situations such as sunsets. This is due to the S23’s ability to capture multiple frames at different exposure levels and then merge them into a single, well-balanced image.

When it comes to low-light photography, the S23 truly shines. The 50MP sensor and f/1.8 aperture work together to capture as much light as possible, resulting in clear, detailed shots even in dimly lit environments. Even scenes with minimal lighting, such as a street at night, produce decent results with a surprising amount of detail.

One exciting new feature of the S23’s camera is its Expert RAW capabilities, which were first introduced with the S22 series. Last year’s model was limited to capturing RAW images at 12MP, despite having a 50MP main sensor. This has been rectified with the S23, which allows users to capture full 50MP RAW images with the tap of a button. This is a significant improvement for those who want more control over their image processing and editing.

The Performance

Upon further testing, we were impressed by the Galaxy S23’s performance capabilities. The Samsung-exclusive version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset proved to be a game-changer, providing an overclocked CPU and GPU that translated into a significant boost in speed and responsiveness. This made using the device a pleasure, especially when multitasking or running demanding applications.

The LPDDR5X RAM is also a standout feature, offering fast and reliable performance with 8GB of memory. We found that this allowed us to switch between apps seamlessly without any noticeable lag or stuttering. Additionally, the UFS 4.0 storage in the 256GB and 512GB models proved to be lightning-fast, providing rapid access to data and files.

One area where the Samsung Galaxy S23 truly excels is in gaming performance. We tested several graphically-intensive games on the device and found that it performed exceptionally well, delivering smooth and fluid gameplay with no lag or stuttering. This is due in part to the powerful Adreno 730 GPU, which is optimized for gaming and offers impressive visual performance.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the Galaxy S23’s video editing capabilities. Despite being a smartphone, it handled 4K video editing with ease, thanks in part to the powerful CPU and GPU. This makes it an excellent choice for content creators and anyone who wants to edit videos on-the-go.
