A tantalizing journey through Indonesian cuisine at The Living Room

August 26, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Embark on a tantalizing journey through Indonesian cuisine at The Living Room, where Chef Dicky Andrean and his assistant, Dimas Rudiansyah, from Four Points Bandung by Sheraton, have brought the essence of Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage to Kuala Lumpur. This buffet is more than just a meal—it’s an exploration of the bold and earthy flavors that define Indonesian cooking, offering diners a unique opportunity to experience the diverse culinary traditions of the archipelago.

Chef Dicky Andrean, a master of Asian cuisine with a particular expertise in the vibrant flavors of Indonesia, has crafted a menu that tells the story of his homeland’s diverse culture. With a career spanning kitchens in Vietnam, Malaysia, and beyond, Chef Dicky brings an array of traditional Indonesian dishes to the table, each one a testament to the rich culinary tapestry of his country.

A Flavorful Symphony

The buffet lineup is a curated journey through the streets of Bandung, the kitchens of Jakarta, Aceh, Cirebon, Solo, and beyond. Each dish is meticulously crafted using traditional ingredients like ginger, turmeric, coriander, and chili, creating a symphony of flavors that sing on the palate.

Rujak Ciherang and Perkedel Jagung from Bandung: Start your culinary adventure with these light bites. The Rujak, a traditional fruit salad with a spicy tamarind dressing, offers a sweet and tangy explosion of flavors, while the Perkedel Jagung, or corn fritters, are delightfully crispy and savory.

Nasi Jeruk: This fragrant rice dish, infused with a subtle citrus aroma, is a refreshing counterbalance to the richer dishes on offer.

Kambing Bakar from Solo: A must-try for meat lovers, this grilled lamb dish is marinated in a medley of spices and grilled to perfection, resulting in a tender and flavorful experience.

Ayam Tangkap from Aceh: This unique and crispy fried chicken dish is both aromatic and bursting with flavor. The blend of spices and herbs in the marinade gives the chicken an irresistible taste, with every bite offering a delightful crunch.

Udang Balado Petai and Terung Buncis Balado from Padang: Not for the faint-hearted, this fiery combination of prawns, stink beans, eggplant, and green beans in a Balado sauce is bold and balanced by earthy flavors and succulent prawns.

Empal Gentong from Cirebon: A comforting beef stew with a rich, creamy coconut milk broth infused with spices, this dish is perfect for those looking for something substantial.

Gado-Gado from Jakarta: A classic Indonesian salad featuring fresh vegetables, tofu, and hard-boiled eggs, all generously coated in a creamy peanut sauce, offering a refreshing break from the heavier dishes.

A Symphony of Sambals

The buffet wouldn’t be complete without a variety of sambals—fiery condiments that are the soul of Indonesian cuisine. Each sambal, from the robust Sambal Bawang with its combination of shallots and chili to the earthy Sambal Petai and the smoky Sambal Terasi, adds a unique dimension to the meal. These sambals elevate the dishes they accompany, enhancing the rich flavors with layers of spice and aroma that are quintessentially Indonesian.

Sweet Endings

No Indonesian feast is complete without dessert, and Chef Dicky’s offerings do not disappoint:

Bubur Sum Sum: A silky coconut milk pudding served with a drizzle of palm sugar syrup, offering a simple yet indulgent end to your meal.

Es Oyen from Bandung: A refreshing iced dessert made with coconut milk, jackfruit, avocado, and other tropical fruits, topped with sweetened condensed milk. It’s the perfect tropical treat to cool and refresh the palate.

A Rotational Feast

With over 50 dishes offered on a rotational basis, every visit to The Living Room is a unique experience. From appetizers to soups, main courses, and desserts, there’s always something new to discover.
