Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice: The Michelin Star Chicken Rice

May 7, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice is hailed as one of the top destinations for this classic dish in Kuala Lumpur, offering an authentic and satisfying experience for claypot rice enthusiasts. Established in 1985 and situated near the bustling Pudu wet markets, Heun Kee has garnered a loyal following over the years.

What sets Heun Kee apart is its commitment to traditional cooking methods, employing charcoal stoves to impart intense flavors and textures to their claypot rice. The two-way heat system, with the rice cooking over the bottom heat and the chicken over the top heat from burning charcoal, ensures a unique and flavorful outcome.

During my visit, I opted for the standard portion of Claypot Chicken Rice (L) The serving is simply ample and satisfying for two. The moment the claypot was opened, a delightful smoky aroma filled the air, signaling a promising meal ahead. We love how they made the dish, the rice was perfectly cooked—soft, fluffy, and distinct, with a moist texture that wasn’t mushy. The chicken pieces were well-marinated with a blend of soy, sesame oil, Chinese wine, and ginger, offering a savory and aromatic bite. The addition of salted fish provided a balanced saltiness without overpowering the dish.

One notable advantage of cooking over charcoal is the sustained heat, ensuring that the meal remains piping hot throughout the dining experience.

While Claypot Chicken Rice is the star of the show at Heun Kee, other dishes on the menu have also gained popularity over time. Options like Stewed Chicken, Homemade Seafood Tofu, Pig’s Stomach in Pepper Soup, Pig’s Trotters, Grouper Fish Head Curry, and Claypot Kampung Chicken in Chinese Wine offer variety and cater to different tastes.

Despite the food being prepared by skilled foreign workers following Madam Heun’s techniques, the quality and taste remain consistent, earning Heun Kee its reputation as a must-visit spot for claypot rice enthusiasts in Kuala Lumpur.

In conclusion, Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice stands out as a top destination for delicious and perfectly cooked claypot rice dishes, delivering a memorable dining experience with its rich flavors and traditional cooking methods.
